2cm HALAMAN 6 SPORT Bolivia's Pinedo Secures 2-2 Draw With U.S. Dallas- Mario Pinedo's goal in the 77th minute salvaged a 2-2 draw for Bolivia against the United States National Team in a soccer friendly between a pair of World Cup finalists at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday. The draw was the third in as many meetings between the two nations over the past 10 months. Hugo Perez scored a goal in each half for the United States and gave the World Cup hosts a 2-1 lead with his second tally in the 47th minute. Bolivia took advantage of a de- fensive lapse by the Americans to earn the draw when Pinedo step- ped in front of U.S. goalkeeper Tony Meola, who was about to field the ball, and flicked it into the goal. Luis Cristaldo had chased down the ball just before it cros- sed the U.S. endline. He sent a low shot from the left wing that stopped in front of Meola. "We had poor communication of the play," said Meola. "I didn't even know the guy was there un- til he touched the ball." The United States hearly won the game in dramatic fashion in the closing seconds when Claudio Reyna's header banged off the crossbar. Bolivia opened the scoring 12 minutes into the match when midfielder Julio Baldivieso roc- keted a 25-metre free kick into the upper right corner of the U.S. goal past a diving Meola. Perez equalised for the home side with a penalty kick in the 31st minute. Cobi Jones had bro- ken free in the penalty box and was taken down by Bolivian de- fender Luis Cristaldo, giving the United States its penalty shot. The Americans grabbed the lead early in the second half when Bolivian goalkeeper Carlos Trocco left the net to challenge American Chris Henderson. Henderson sent a pass to an unmarked Perez, who put the ball into the open net. The match at the site of one of the nine World Cup venues drew a crowd of 26,835. Lineups: Bolivia Carlos Trucco, Marco Sandy, Miguel Rimba, Modesto Soruco, Luis Cristaldo, Vladimir Soria, Ra- miro Castillo (Mario Pinedo, 71st minute), Julio Baldivieso, Juan Chavez, Jaime Moreno (Richard Cueto, 76th), William Ramello (Alvaro Pena, 64th). U.S. Tony Meola, Marcelo Bal- boa, Alexi Lalas, Desmond Arrns- trong, Jeff Agoos (Paul) Cali- giuri, 45th), Mike Burns, Thomas Dooley, Chris Henderson, Cobi Jones, Hugo Perez (Janusz Mic- hallik, 81st), Peter Vermes (Cla- dio Reyna, 45th). (Rtr) Hack Upsets Martinez To Reach Houston Final Houston, Texas- Seventh seed Sabine Hack of Germany took advantage of su- perior conditioning to upset top seed Conchita Martinez of Spain on Saturday and reach the final of the Virginia Slims of Houston tennis tournament. Hack, who has had some of her best results in Houston, fought back for a 2-6 6-4 6-4 victory in rematch of last year's final won by Martinez. It was the first victory over a top-10 player for Hack since her semifinal win over Jana Novotna here last year. "She got tired. I was moving her around pretty much. She's not in the best physical shape, not as good as me," said Hack, who had never beaten the third- ranked Spaniard. In Sunday's final, Hack will have her work cut out when she takes on fourth seed Mary Pierce of France. Pierce put on another strong showing in dominating unseeded Swede Asa Carlsson 6-2 6-2. Pierce has not lost a set and has dropped just 10 games all week. The 19th-ranked Hack had, trouble finding a rhythm in the first set as she sprayed 21 unfor- ced errors. Martinez built a 4-2 second-set lead and looked on her way to vic- tory when Hack began control- ling points to win the next four games and level the match. The Spaniard again took an early 2-0 lead in the third set but grew fatigued as Hack sent her scurrying around the clay court with lengthy baseline rallies. "I started playing good. I was controlling the match perfectly then I started getting tired," ad- mitted Martinez, who lost the next five games. Martinez saved four set points but was unable to fight her way back to victory. Pierce was never challenged, breaking the 18-year-old Swede four times in the first set and three in the second. She dropped her serve just once only the fourth time this week. (Reuter) Hilton Head Island - World number one Steffi Graf has withdrawn from next week's Family Cup Circle due to a knee injury sustained in practice, tournament officials said. Graf, who had been enjoying an injury-free, undefeated sea- son, hurt her left knee on Thur- sday while practicing in Boca Ra- ton, Florida for her first clay court tournament of the year. The German star will return to Germany for further evaluation and treatment and hopes to re- join the WTA Tour at her next scheduled tournament, the Citi- zen Cup in Hamburg, which be- gins April 25. The Kenyans illuminated a bitter Hungarian spring day, ma- king light of a biting wind to re- cord an unprecendented sweep of the four individual titles. Only the Kenyan senior wo- men failed to win the team event but as ample compensation, He- len Chepngeno, a former field at- hlete, won their first ever senior title. Chepngeno joined William Si- gei, Philip Musimo and Sally Bo- sarsio as the 1994 champions fol- lowing four races which emphasi- sed the simplicty and strength of the Kenyan running philosophy. The Kenyans tuned up for the championships at a three-week training camp at the foot of Mt Kenya with an unremitting se- ries of high quality workouts. Their training runs are faster than most of their rivals can ma- nage in races and the benefits were abvious on Saturday as they loped easily around the Kincsem horserace course. Chief coach Mike Kosgei refu- sed, with a smile, to speculate on the Kenyan tactics before the se- nior men's race, in which Sigei was hoping to emulate suspen- ded compatriot John Ngugi by re- taining the men's title. "We are going to run a very lo- vely race," he said. Their opponents, and certainly former champion Khalid Skah of Morocco would not necessarily agree that the Kenyans run "lo- vely" races. But the Kenyan strategy, which in Saturday's senior men's race involved two at the front set- ting the pace and two further back watching the opposition, is clinically effective, and the style and grace of their running drew murmers of appreciation from the stoic spectators shivering on the course. Kosgei, who urged his team's on from a spot near the finish line, said the Kenyans had plan- ned a Sigei victory after pacema- king from Wilson Omwoyo and Paul Tergat. "You can do anything you like when you are in shape," he said. "Th race went according to plan." Now, according to team mana- ger Gilbert Seii, the Kenyans will prepare for the Commonwealth Games this Auguts in Victoria, Canbada. What about Sigei, he was as- ked. What will be do on the track? "He will have to go back to Ke- nya and start again." Seii replied with a huge laugh. Style comes naturally to the Kenyans. Success they never take for granted. John: He is really a nice policeman, Made. Made: I think so, too. John. He wasn't strict as we're strangers here. BUt the fault is on us again. We didn't pay enough attention to the traffic signs. John: He was right; the traffic here is really busy. Made: Anyway, he didn't penalize us for the violation and he just allowed us to go on our trip. John: We've saved a lot of time, Made. Top Chess Brains Battle In Unlikely Spanish Town Linares, Spain - Every year most of the world's sharpest chess minds spend three weeks locked in combat in a drab hotel in a depressed former mining town in southern Spain. What started as a modest af- fair with spectators shivering in the local basketball court was classed this year as the world's top-ranking chess tournament with contestants including Ana- toly Karpov and Garry Kasparov. Fourteen players and their support teams spent most of their time working out tactics in far from luxurious hotel rooms in Li- nares, all for the chance of a mere $7,000 first prize. A stroll outside would have ta- ken them down streets lined with ageing cars, decaying factories and dingy bars. Luis Rentero, a local busi- nessman and chess fanatic, sta ged the first tournament in 1978 with a few regional and national stars. "I was a provincial champion in the 1950s but left chess and when I came back to it 20 years later I found younger people were beating me so I decided to stage a tournament," he said. Rentero said he had taken the contest up to category 18 status the highest -- simply by making tougher and tougher entry rules and sticking to them.
