Halaman 6 Bali Post SENIN, 15 JULI 1991 SENIN, 15 JU SPORTS Nastase Leads Trio Into Hall Of Fame NEWPORT, Rhode Island- Ilie Nastase, who mixed show- manship with shotmaking bril- liance, crowned his controver- sial career on Saturday by lea- ding a trio into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. "I've been on the bad side of tennis, so it's nice to go to the other side," said Nastase at the induction ceremony at the New- port Casino. "This is the first ti- me in 25 years that I've won any kind of award. I'm very glad to win the best one." Inducted along with Nastase were former U.S. Open cham- pion Guillermo Vilas of Argenti- na and Australian Ashley Coo- per, who won the U.S., Wimble- don and Australian champion- ships in 1958. Nastase, 44, was known for a fiery temper and outrageous on- court antics, but also had the ta- lent to excel. The Romanian won the 1972 United States Open and the 1973 French Open and was Wimbledon runner-up in 1972 and 1976. He was ranked num- ber one in 1973 and was among the world's top 10 from 1969 to 1977. Among his 57 career sing- les were four season-ending Masters titles.
