The 39-year-old Englishman, who will start Sunday's Italian Grand Prix on pole position in pursuit of a record ninth win in a single season, said he had made the decision to retire for reasons beyond his control. In a statement, which he conti- nued to deliver despite an inter- ruption from a team official who had been asked to try and stop hil made it clear his negotiations with the Williams team had bro- ken down beyond repair. He said: "Due to circumstances beyond my control, I Have deci- ded to retire from Formula One at the end of the season."
