2cm NEWS MAKER Brett Steven Passes Muster At Open A YEAR ago New Zealander Brett Steven was playing in a minor tournament in Malaysia. Six months ago he was playing team tennis in the United States. On Thursday, in his first ever Grand Slam tournament he played Thomas Muster, world ranked number 18, and thumped the Austrian in three straight sets. Steven said the second-round victory on a packed number one court at the Australian Open ranked as one of his career hig- hlights. As he almost gave up the game in the late 1980s with an elbow injury, just being on the court was an achievement in itself. The 23-year-old Steven's march through the men's rankings in the latter half of 1992 has been nothing short of spectacular, as he has risen to his present 71 from 225 last January. "This time last year I was in Malaysia playing a satellite tour- nament,' Steven told reporters after his win over an in-form Mus- ter, a former world number six who also climbed up the rankings last year after a car accident in 1989. A couple of months playing on the Atlanta championship team of World Team Tennis changed everything, according to Steven, who started playing the game when he was only five. "It really got me started started...I gained a lot of confidence and I have been performing consistently since then, playing 12 tournaments and losing only once in the first round," Steven said. Steven's confidence Muster was a victim of Steven's confidence in his 6-2 7-6 6-4 defeat, unable to counter the New Zealander's aggression, parti- cularly in a second-set tie-break which could have swung the match Muster's way. "If I had lost that it would have been harder to have come back and win in four sets," Steven said. The athletic Steven was in total control of the third set, losing only five points on his own serve but forcing seven break points on his opponent's service before settling the match in the 10th game. MITSUBISHI MOTORS Halaman 10 Bali Post Fully-laden Tanker On Fire, Starts Spilling Singapore- English Corner Ablazing supertanker fully laden with almost two million barrels of crude started spilling oil into the sea off the northern tip of Sumatra on Thursday, triggering a regional anti- pollution alert. Salvage experts were flying to the scene to check the extent of the spillage from the 255, 312-tonne Maersk Navigator, abandoned by its crew and still drifting 15 hours after colliding with another tanker. It was not clear if the oil in the sea was from the supertanker's cargo or its fuel storage tanks. But the size of the Maersk Navi- gator's cargo means any major oil spillage could have severe envi- ronmental consequences. The world's worst oil spillage was of about 2.2 million barrels, after two supertankers collided off Tobago in 1979. "If the spillage reaches Ma- laysian waters, we can expect a disaster," said Malaysian Envi- ronment Minister Law Hieng Ding, whose country activated its oil spill contingency plan. "Even though the supertanker is still far away from us we can- not rule out the possibility that it might into our waters as it de- pends a lot on the direction of wind, wave and current." Danish owners A. P. Moller Si- ngapore said in a statement: "The Maersk Navigator conti- nues to be on fire. "Some oil has spilled into the sea and is on fire. However, at this point of time no information is available on the extent of the Sanko Honour had been exti- oil spill." The Singapore-registered Maersk Navigator, built in 1989, is located at six degrees five mi- nutes north and 94 degrees 25 minutes east -- about 60 nautical miles off the coast of the Indone- sian island of Sumatra. From Oman to Japan It was an route from Oman to Japan when it collided with the 96,545-tonne Sanko Honour at about 3 a.m. (1900 GMT Wednes- day) in the Andaman Sea, near the entrance to the congested Malacca Strait between Malay- sia and Sumatra. It was raining at the time of the accident. A.P. Monller said four tugs with salvage and fire-fighting equipment were sent from Singa- pore, with the first due to arrive at around midnight (1600 GMT). Two more were due on the scene by 6 a.m. on Friday (2200 GMT Thursdsay). The 24 crew members of the Maersk Navigator had abando- ned ship and were rescued by a passing German container vessel the DSR Atlantic, Singapore offi- cials said. He said the Maersk Navigator was damaged in the midsection of its port side but could not give de- tails. He said major oil companies in Singapore had equipment to combat oil pollution and "if the case requires their equipment to be called upon to be used in that area, then they are ready." British captain The supertanker had a British captain and included 16 Singapo- rean crew, five Indians, one Bur- mese and one Malaysian. The Sanko Honour was believed to be manned by South Koreans. Teh said the Sanko Honour, which was also Singapore- flagged, was registered by Libe- ria's Canopus Trading Corp but was ultimately owned by Sanko Steamship Co of Japan. In Tokyo a spokesman for Sanko said his company had a time charter on the vessel but did not own it. Teh said his Marine Depar- tment had asked owners of both ships to bring crew members to Singapore for questioning. "Key crew members will not be allowed to sign off the ships." Malaysian Environment Mi- nister Law said the chairman of the oil spill committee, which comprises major oil firms, had been asked to return immedia- tely to Kuala Lumpur from a meeting in Bangkok. Oil spill monitored He said various government agencies, including the Maritime Rescue and Coordination Centre and the Departement of Environ- ment, were monitoring the oil spill. Thai authorities said any spill should not threaten their waters. "Thailand is now in a season which sees northeast monsoon winds flowing southward toward Sumatra," said an official of the Environment Protection Divi- sion of the Harbour Department. He said such winds should pre- vail into March, sending any oil slick southeast into the Malacca Strait rather than north. The strait itself has witnessed a series of accidents in the past year and is the graveyard ot countless ships. Malaysia has called for stricter safety measures in the strait and has proposed levying a toll on passing vessels to help pay for professional navigators. Up to 600 ships pass daily through the 600-mile-long waterway. Japanese oil company Ide- mitsu Kosan Co said it had char- tered the Maersk Navigator but had leased space to General Se- kiyu Co, an affiliate of oil giant Exxon Corp. A spokesman for General Se- kiyu in Japan confirmed the com- pany owned the crude oil but gave no other details. The accident was the second major tanker mishap this month. The Braer spewed thousands of tonnes of oil into the sea after running aground in the Shetland Islands off the Scottish coast. (Rtr). APA ALIH CENINGMAI PANGERAN ANSUMAN?
