r NEWS MAKER Richard Nixon HALAMAN 10 Bali Post English Corner Don't Deface Central Part Of Bali WITH the increase in the number of tourists visiting Bali, which should soon reach the three million mark, including the domestic tourists, more and more areas are opened to development and to tourism. Part of it is done by following a policy of develop ment of new tourist areas, but part of it is spontaneous, and this is the most dangerous indeed. It is interesting to see who this spontaneous development is pre- paring to gulp down new areas of the island. One of the first areas to be swallowed in the upcoming years is the area located between Sa- nur and Klungkung, leading East to Karangasem. There is a new highway of some sort exiting between Nusa Dua and Sanur which is going to be built. Cons- truction is already under way. scussion for several years, and an Indonesian engineer of Balinese origins, Sukawati, had suggested the construction of a flying hig- hway. The project was received by howls from most of the reli- gious Balinese literati: it would have disturbed the sacredness of processions, which would have to pass below the causeway road, thus in a position of relative im- purity. The project was therefore abandoned. But, meanwhile, spe- culators of all hues, and espe- cially originating from the "han- dicraft heart" of Bali, fearful that the traffic would, in the future, bypass their artshops, have re- lentlessly speculated in the buying of much of the land loca- ted on the sides of the road. What has started a few years ago with feelers to know the exact location of the road and to get the name of the owners is now nearing con- clusion. Much of the land has changed hands and the new ow- ners are preparing themselves to build the artshops of the future all along the new highway. I dare ners were against the building of the flying highway, which, at least, would have had the advan- tage of leaving the landscape in- tact. And much of the itinerary of the new road is in untouched landscapes, the last remaining the opening of rafting on the ones to the South of Sukawati, Ubud and Gianyar. The ledger on Nixon, a Republican and 37th president from 1969 to 1974, when he quit to avoid impeachment in the Water- gate scandal, brims with paradoxical twists. The 81-year-old Nixon started as a red-baiting congressman in the Cold War era but years later promoted detente in Moscow and Beijing. A political loser who seemed finished after beatings in the early 1960s, he went on to become president in 1968; the ruined man of Watergate in 1974; the beneficiary of a stunning presi- dential pardon, and a rich recluse in retirement limbo. He emerged as an elder statesman wooed by the media for comments on public events and aided by his own efforts to rehabi- litate himself by writing books, travelling and offering advice to leaders like President Clinton, China's Deng Xiaoping and for- mer Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev. A 1986 Gallup poll found that three-quarters of those surveyed still thought Nixon deserved to be forced out of office -- but more than half also thought he deserved the pardon granted by his successor, Gerald Ford. Richard Milhous Nixon spent a lifetime surmounting obstac- les and achieving success by sheer determination. Childhood Born on January 9, 1913, in Yorba Linda, California, he wor- ked from age 10 to help the family and finance his education. He won a law degree at Duke University and served in World War Two as a naval aviation ground officer in the Pacific. After World War Two, he entered politics in 1946 and rode the anti-communism issue to a Republican seat in Congress. In 1952, by then a Senator and well-known for his tough anti- Soviet views, he was chosen by Republican leaders to back up General Dwight Eisenhower on the party's presidential ticket. That campaign created his first major political crisis when critics charged that rich backers had bank-rolled a secret "slush fund" for Nixon. Ike was considering dumping him. Nixon recouped in an emotional television speech, painting himself as a martyr victimised by petty rumour. (Reuter). Kadek Adnyana Vienna Exhibitions Show Totalitarian Architecture DICTATORS are notorious for dabbling in architecture as they dream of ideal cities for their new societies. Two exhibitions which have just opened in Vienna highlight the use of classical models and traditional design in the plans of totalitarian leaders including Jo- sef Stalin and Adolf Hitler. At the Kuenstlerhaus, "Art and Dictatorship" looks not only at architecture but also art in Stalin's Soviet Union, Hitler's Germany, Benito Mussolini's Italy, and 1930s and 40s Austria. Vienna's Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) is showing "The Ty- ranny of Beauty," on architecture of the Stalin era. Hitler and Stalin, although ideological foes, had strikingly si- milar tastes in art and architecture. Their ideal buildings, massive in scale to dwart and impress their citizens, drew on classical antecedents to create a sense of public dignity and solemnity. "Soviet people can produce more majestic and memorable examples of architectural crea- TOURISM ACTIVITIES Suarshanas' Silver Wedding Mr. Wayan T. Art in Nazi Germany was also realistic in style, with "degene- rate" modern works ridiculed, destroyed or sold abroad. But German artists often pre- ferred more escapist or classical themes, although here too the propaganda message was never far away. Whereas the Nazis preferred austere designs, overpowering in their simplicity, the Stalinists decorated their monumental buildings with ornamentation. For instance a "Judgement of The result, a combination of Paris" from 1939 celebrates Nazi neo-classicism and art deco, such ideals of beauty by showing a as a design for Moscow's Aeroflot youth wearing lederhosen sizing headquarters, could pass muster up three naked German women among today's fashionable "post- rather then Greek goddesses. modern" buildings. "The Standard-bearer" of 1934 But both Hitler and Stalin re- jected anytying smacking of the lively avan-garde movements of the early 20th century -- unlike Mussolini's Italy, where the Fu- turists with their love of techno- logy, speed and violence were clo- sely associated with the Fascist regime. Massive busts and futuristic portraits of the Duce on show in the Kuenstlerhaus still have so- mething terrifying about them. Instruments Of Propaganda For both the Nazis and the communists, art and architec- ture were important instruments of propaganda. And that meant they had to be accessible to ordinary people if they were to get their message across. is portrait of Hitler as medieval knight in armour. The Nazis had grandiose plans to rebuild parts of Berlin, Munich and Linz, the Austrian city near Hitler's birthplace of Braunau. Hitler, a failed artist, took a per- sonal interest. Similarly, the communists, with the active participation of Stalin, drew up detailed plans for the urban renewal of Moscow. Some of these, including the ornate metro stations and skys- crapers such as Moscow State University, were realised. The skyscrapers were inten- ded to match those in New York, and designs from the late 1940s show astonishing similarities to skyscrapers built in New York before World War One. Designs For Palace Hence the "Socialist Realisme" This rivalry culminated in the decreed as the only possible style designs for the Palace of the So- viets. A design by architect Boris Iofan for a 415 metre (1,300 feet) high tower topped by a massive 80 metres (260 feet) statue of Le- nin, was accepted in 1933, The palace, embodying the to- talitarian order with the great leader at the top, was never built, although the huge Redeemer Cathedral on its designated site was pulled down. "I'd like Mr Rabin to say if he wants peace or not. "The deadlines have passed with complete anarchy on the ground.... The Balkans, with its bloody history of ethnic hatreds and long-drawn-out wars, is curren- tly at the centre of Russian diplo- macy. Russia is pressing hard to mediate a settlement in Bosnia, clearly viewing it as a test of Kremlin diplomatic clout. Under a deal sealed in Was- hington last year, Israel agreed to pull its forcess out of Jericho and Gaza by April 13 and hand the districts over to Palestine Tuesday, said Israel was delibe- rately delaying its pullback.
