2cm SABTU, 5 JUNI 1993 Halaman 6 SPORTS Foreman Will Quit Fighting, Definitely, Maybe Las Vegas- Monday night's bout with Tommy Morrison definitely will be George Foreman's last fight. But then again, "You can never say never." And of course, "There's something about George that really loves money." That in a nutshell and in his own is the state of the 44-year-old fig- hter's career and a good example of his keen sense of never closing the door on a chance to market himself, as he heads into the scheduled 12-round bost a man 20 years younger and packing a much respected left hook. If Foreman wins the fight for the heavyweight title of the very junior and often ridiculed World Boxing Organisation (WBO), "It's gonna be hard" to walk away from the cain multi-millions of dollars he will be offered to conti- nue defying a boxer's old age, Fo- reman said on Thursday. Foreman, 72-3, insists that the WBO title means something to him and that he will add in collec- tion which includes belts from the World Boxing Association (WBA) and the World Boxing Council (WBC), which he won in his first incarnation as a boxer. Foreman, who won a Olympic gold medal in 1988, took the world heavyweight title in 1973 by knocking Joe Frazier down six times in the send. But in Kinshasha, Zaire, in 1974, an ageing Muhammad Ali outfoxed Foreman by having him punch himself out early in the fight, setting him up for an eighth-round knockout. Fo- reman retired after losing to Jimmy Young in 1977. Second Life Foreman began his second life later in 1977, winning 24 fights and becoming a folk hero in the process, before losing a 12-round decision in a title fight against former champion Evander Holy- field in April 1991. "If I get this WBO belt it will be meaningful," Foreman said. "I'll keep it for a year or two and then put a museum. I mean, I've got it. I'll be content." Foreman who has signed to star in a television situation co- medy called "George" to be broad- cast this autumn and about, of course, a retired fighter who helps youngsters stay out of trouble -- agreed to fight Morri- son, 36-1. it was because the WBO made it a title fight. But if he beats Morrison, Fo- reman, who has gone from a 3-2 favourite in the early betting line to the underdog as money shifted to Morrison making him a 7-2 fa- vourite, could be in line to fight WBC champion Lennox Lewis of Britain or American Riddick Bowe, the WBA and Internatio- nal Boxing Federation champion. Conversely, a Morrison victory would likely give him a title shot, probably against Lewis in October. Offer Of Bowe's Manager Bowe's manager, Rock Newman, says he has offered title fight, but Foreman said that is untrue. "I hung around and tried to fol- low those guys (Bowe and Lewis) around. The money would have been great," Foreman said. "They turned their back on me and went after people that it just didn't make sense to fight...... These guys don't any parts of me ever. So I got them out of my dreams." Foreman, was asked if it was flattering to have those two fig- hters avoid him. "It is flattering. But at the same time I wanted something more than flattering," Foreman said. "And it's flattering to a guy (Morrison) 24 years old, old enough to be my son, to say he had to go to an all-boys" place to train to get seriously in shape for a guy like me." "That's flattering. I sit there and I think, wow, I must be so- mething, Even I wouldn't go to an all boys place." (Reuter). Keino's Son Seeks U.S. Title New Orleans - He speaks with an American acent and uses current American slang, but when Martin Keino steps on the track, he evokes me- mories of a different country and a different time. He is the son of Kenyan Olym- pic legend Kip Keino, and in the athletics world that will probably always be how he is known best. An interior design student at the University of Aricona, he ho- pes one day to design furniture, first in the United States, per- SUARA SEBENING APAPUN DAPAT ANDA NIKMATI haps later in his home country of Kenya. At the moment, though, it is his running that attracts the most attention. On Friday, the 20-year-old Ke- nyan will attempt to win in the U.S. collegiate championship in the 3,000 metre steeplechase, the event in which his father won the gold medal at the 1972 Olympics. His personal best of eight mi- nutes 44.94 seconds is almost eight seconds slower than that of the U.S. collegiate leader, Kurt Sole Distributorr: Black of Weber State University, but Kein believes that if the race is a tactical one, he has a chance. "I'm pretty strong," he said on Thursday, "but I definitely consi- der myself an underdog. I'm really not a steeplechaser. I con- sider myself more of a 1,500 metre runner. I'm still learning sevent." His father, in one of their monthly telephone chats, had re- commended Keino avoid the stee- plechase because of possible da- mage to his knees. (Rtr). Bali Post Walder Becomes Eighth-best Long Jumper New Orleans- Eric Walder, expected by many to become 8th great Ame- rican long jumper, proved it on Thursday as he leaped a stun- ning 8.53 metres (28 feet) at the U.S. collegiate championships. The jump was the best in the world this year. "Immediately I knew it was a great jump, but I had no idea it was a 28-foot (8.53 metre) jump," said Walder, a University of Ar- kansas student who jomped up and down and spread both arms in the victory sign after the leap, his fourth of the competition. "Now I want to go to Eugune, Oregon (in two weeks) and make the U.S. team for the world cham- pionships in Stuttgart said Wal- der, shose previous best was 8.47 metres (27 feet, 9 1/2 inches) last year. Bentley's jump The winning jump followed al- most immediately after Dion Bentley of the University of Flo- rida had assumed with a leap of 8.39 metres (27 feet, 61/2 inches). It didn't surprise Bentley. "Eric has that great comeback ability, like Carl Lewis," Bentley said of the three-times Olympic champion. Only hours earlier world re- cord holder Mike Powell of the United States had taken the 1993 dwith a leap of 8.50 metres (27 feet, 10 3/4 inches) at a meeting in Spain. Powell's world record is 8.95 metres (29 feet, 4 1/2 inches). "Eric needs to thank Dion," said University of Arkansas jumps coach Dick Booth, who coaches both Walder and 1992 Olympic tmp champion Mike Conley. "He wasn't running hard earlier, but on that last jump he was flying." American Randy Jenkins, a student at the University of Ten- nessee who did not compete last year as he battled Hodgkin's di- sease, won the men's high jump at 2.28 metres (7 feetinches). Canadian Kelly Blair of the University of Oregon was first in the heptathlon with 6,038 points as she upset Australian Sharon Jaklofsky of Louisiana State University. The meeting, being held at the site of the student Olympic trials, continues through Saturday. (Reuter). Professional Referees A Step Closer Zurich- FIFA moved a step closer to their goal of professional referees in all major soccer leagues on Thursday, and could set a time li- mit for their worldwide introduc- tion later this year. The International Football Fe- deration's decision-making exe- cutive committee accepted a draft document defining a semi- professional referee and asked a working group to prepare a con- cept for their intruduction by December. FIFA's executive committee also ordered all national soccer associations to integrate their country's regerees organisation into the national body, in prepa- ration for taking control of pro- fessional refereeing. FIFA spokesman Guido Tog- noni said: "Introduction of semi- professional referees is the next realistic step over the next few years. "This is a radical move forward and we can only take this step by SANSUI PT. WINA PADMA SEJAHTERA ____ Gedung Putra Lt.6, JI. Gunung Sahari 39, Jakarta 10720. Telp. We can't impose this on na- tional associations, we have to persuade. We may possibly intro- duce a time scale in December." Sepp Blatter, general secre- tary of FIFA, praised the Italian league's introduction of semi- professional referees, who have been described by the sport's go- vernment body as "someone who may have ar: additional profes- sion, but whose prime profession, and the time he devotes (to it), should be refereeing". Blatter said: "We are very pleased that Italy has. really knuckled down to this, and that Spain, Germany and Argentina are following them." Germany's Fee For Referees Referees in Germany are paid 2,600 marks ($1,600) for a first division game, he added. FIFA were unhappy with Ger- many's unterpretation of punis- hing players who accumulate yel- low cards for foul play and have ordered them and Portugal among other cuntries, to stick to FIFA guidelines. "In our struggle against vio- lence in favour of fair play, it seems some national associa- tions have not been handling ex- pulsions and yellow cards in the right manner," Blatter said. All countries will be ordered to suspend players for a minimum of one game after accumulating two or up to five yellow cards in the same competition. (Rtr). SABTU, 5 JUNI 1993 HOTEL'S ACTIVITIES Sweden's Lund University Male Choir In Bali Grand Hyatt Bali, together with the Embassy of Sweden will pre- sent a special performance for the Hotel's June Cultural Cicle Pro- gramme. The Lund University Male choir spoorted by "Bina Vokalia Bali" will perform at the "Pasar Senggol", Grand Hyatt Bali's open- air market place on June 15th. The combination of these two major choirs will be a spectacular event on that evening. The 52 voice male choir from Sweden will perform classical choral music, as well as Swedish folk tunes, while the host Balinese Choir will present en- chanting Indonesian songs. Two famous Indonesian songs will also be presented in a joint performance of all 77 singers, The Lund University Male Choir (Lunds Studentsangforening) is made up of students and alumni from the departments of the Univer- sity. Few students in the chorus have music as their plimary field of study. This allows the choir members to participate in the musical life at the University and yet pursue other areas of academic and profes- sional interest. The chorus has been an important part of the acade- micand student life in Lund throughout the years. Besides its regular performances in Lund (which include a televisised May Day concert in the steps of the main university building) and appearances Royals Beat Brewers Kansas City, Missouri - Greg Gagne's two-run double capped a three-run third inning and the Kansas City Royals held (6-5) the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday to take first place in the American League West.
