2cm NEWS MAKER Boutros Boutros-Ghali Shocked At Massacress In Liberia U.N.Secretary General Boutros Boutros Ghali on Tuesday condemned the weekend massacres in Liberia in which more than 350 civilians were shot or hacked to death and more than 700 wounded. Boutros-Ghali said in a statement he was "shocked and ou- trage on learning of the senseless massacre perpetrated on defen- celess displaced persons". He said his special representative, Trevor Gordon-Somers, would be in Monrovia on Wednesday to find out who was respon- sible for the slaughter at a refugee camp at Harbel near the capital. The bloodbath evidently began as gunmen were searching for food the United Nations had just delivered. Boutros-Ghali said U.N.headquarters was receiving reports from the U.N. High Commisisoner for Refugees and the U.N. Children's Fund, both of which have staff in Liberia. The Security Council was working on a similar statement con- demning the massacres. Its draft said leaders of all factions should control their forces and take steps to ensure there was no repetition of the killing. But the council postponed for a day issuing of the statement after West African delegates insisted a reference be included to Charles Taylor's rebel National Patriotic Front of Liberia, bla- med by survivors for the attack. France was seeking a compromise formula that would not point a finger at Taylor until an investigation was conclude, di- plomats said. Taylor has denied the accusation, saying they are a pretext for a West African intervention force, known as ECOMOG, to launch a new offensive against him in the country's three-year old civil war.(Rtr).
