HALAMAN 6 SPORT ISU Won't Discuss Olympic Judging Chiba, Japan - The International Skating Union (ISU) refused judging controversies arising from the Winter Olympics in Norway last month. But they did agree that their relations with the press had been agravated and pledged to im- prove them. Four senior ISU officials held a meeting with journalists during the World championships on Tuesday, the first of what they hoped would be a series of "mee- ting the uneducated" as one of the officials put it. The officials were ISU presi- dent Olaf Poulsen of Norway, vice-president Lawrence Demmy of Britain, and the chairmen of the Figure Skating and the Ice Dancing technical commissaries, Sally Stapleford of Britain and Austria. fans Kutschera of using from the meeting was the ISU's inten- tion to appoint a media liaison of- ficer to deal with press queries and explanations to the press. This followed criticism of the lack of explanation of the judging at the Olympics, particularly in the women's and ice dancing competitions. The ISU refused to consider al- lowing judges or referees to speak to the press about the judging af ter individual sections of competitions. "It is not possible during an event. Our regulations prevent judges to do this during during a competition. It could influence the judging of the rest of the event," Demny said. But another member of the ice dance committee, Wolfgang Kunz of Germany, said he felt there could be comment "not from the judges, but from the referee." The ice dance has three events: the compulsory dances, the origi- nal dance and the free dance. The other competitions have two, the technical programme the free skating. Women's Competition Journalists were repulsed from asking questions about the judging of the women's competi- tion in Norway, where Oksana Baiul beat Nancy Kerrigan for the gold; and about the ice dare Britons Jayne Torvill and Chris- topher Dean finished third be- hind two Russian couples. But earlier Stapleford defen- ded the Olympic judging of the women, where Baiul won a close 5-4 decision even though many observers felt strongly that Ker- rigan should have won. "I have to say in any way I think it was unfounded criti- cism," Stapleford said. "That's not saying everything was per- fect, but the result with Kerrigan and Baiul could have gone either way for very legitimate reasons. "I don't think the result was in any way result," she said, critici- sing many of the media for being "uneducated, knowing very little if anything about the technical side of our sport. "Stapleford said she felt jud- ging had improved greatly in re- cent years and she was sympat- hetic to the dea of improved com- munication with the press. Torvill, Dean One of the Olympic ice dance judges, Canadian Jean Senft, went some way towards explai- ning the third place given to Tor- vill and Dean in Norway. The Britons were penalised for an illegel lift and an illegal split by Dean while the winners, Rus- sians Oksana Baiul and Evgeny Platov, appeared to get away with two illegal separations. Senft said ice dancing "is not just judged on illegalities. You have to look at the overall quality of skating, the speed of covering the ice and a myriad of other gestures. "The illegalities that will get punished are the ones that leap out at you, like an illegal lift or jump. They were very clear, very blatant," she said. "Torvill and Dean were slow. They had a lot of straiggnts, and there was bad footwork until the last minute of their fire dance. They did brilliantly t get third place, and believe me, I love Maradona Absent From Argentina Squad Recife, Brazil- Diego Maradona was missing from the Argentina squad which arrived in Recife on Monday for a friendly international against Brazil despite having been selec- Diego Maradona BARU! She added that it was "interes- ting to note that of the 12 judges including the referee, the assis- tant referes and the substitue judge, only one judge them first. "I think the consensus clearly was that Torvill and Dean were not the leaders."
