Pura Sakenan This is the sea temple located on the tiny island of Serangan, founded by the saint Dang Hyang Nirartha in the 16th cen- tury. It has the specific pyrami- dal "candi" shrines of that per- iod. Hindu devotees worship in this temple during its festival, the day after Kuningan Holiday. About The Beautiful Indonesian Rice Culture Long ago, the islands of the Indonesian archipelago were steep mountains, great forests, and dense undergrowth, which made it difficult for people to get food to fulfill their daily needs. The people cleared pat- ches of land by felling the trees and burning the vegetation, and when one particular area had become "exhausted", the peo- ple moved to another location. This slashing and burning cau- sed the land to become bare, cracked and parched during the dry season and to be threatened, by floods during the rainy sea- son. Goddess of Rice, descended Seeing all this, Dewi Sri, the from heaven to teach people how to plant and cultivate rice. Through her gift of rice, the peo- ple learned how to terrace the land, transforming it into beau- tiful, sculptured rice paddies with a complex irrigation sys- tem for utilizing the gift of wa- ter provided by the gods. The cycle of planting and harvesting was regulated so well that peo- ple enjoyed plentyful harvests at least twice a year. as a sign of gratitude to Almig- hty God.
