Gone will be the vast organisa- tion which supplied much of the coaching and equipment and channelled promising athletes through a well-oiled training system. Gone too will bé dozens of top- quality facilities located in Rus- sia and other former Soviet re- publics now considered foreign states. Lacking most of all will be money. The second most powerful for- mer republic will find its athletes scrambling for sponsors to pro- vide for its most basic needs--kit, equipment and even transport, all payable in scarce convertible currency. "Given the shortage of funds for Ukrainian sport, only the very best athletes liable to finish sixth or better will be going to Lille- hammer or Atlanta," Valery Bor- zov, head of Ukraine's National Olympic committee, said in an in- terview. "And that means giving prio- rity to those sports and which Ukrainian athletes are regarded as favorites." For Ukraine, those sports are most likely to be athletics, gym- nastics, wrestling, fencing, han- dball and rowing. Ukrainian athletes competing in the joint CIS team at the Bar- celona Olympics collected four in- dividual gold medals. Winners were greeted with the blue-and-yellow national flag and the revived 19th century na- tional anthem "Ukraine has yet to perish." "I frankly never believed I would hear the anthem and see the flag," said gymnast Tatyana Gutsu, who won four medals in Barcelona, including two golds. "I believe we will win even more Olympic medals in Atlanta if we go as an independent team." Showing the flag was also im- portant to the country's leader- ship, keen to boost sagging public morale amid economic uncer- tainty and plunging living standards. President Leonid Kravchuk told Olympic champions at a la- vish ceremony last week they had underscored what Ukrainians wanted when they voted over- whelmingly for independence in a referendum last December. "Victories at the Olympics in Barcelona were not only a spor- ting but also a political act," he said. Kravchuk issued an official or- der obliging the government to resolve financial arrangements, including convertible currency, for athletes competing in the Olympics and other top-level championships. But Borzov, Olympic 100 me- tres gold medallist at the 1972 Munich Games, and other top of ficials harbour no illusions about the task facing them. The most modern sports in- stallations have reverted to Rus- sia, especially in shooting, ar chery, yachting and Alpine and cross-country skiing. Most senior coaches and sports doctors have also remained in Ukraine's giant northern neighbour. en- Developing mass sport and couraging young hopefuls is pro- ving a difficult business in the economic crisis. Professional swimming les- sons cost about 400 ton 600 cou- pons (Ukraine's quasi-currency) a month -- a near-- impossible burden for the average salary of about 3,500. Frost Leads Illinois Golf Coal Valley, Illinois- David Frost of South Africa continued his bid wire-to-wire by firing a third-round, six-under- par 64 for a five-shot lead at the $1 million Hardee's Classic men's golf tournament on Saturday. Frost, who began the tourna- ment with stunning 62, leads Tom Lehman and Lorn Roberts who shot 66s in their quest for initial victories on the Tour. Aside from Roberts and Lehman, only Paul Azinger, who shot tand seven shots off the pace, appears to have a legiti- miate, if remote, chance to shot at catching Frost. Frost has led since Thursday, when he opened with a remar- kable 62 and increased his mar- gin to three after a 68 on Friday. Frost had six birdies on Saturday. Along with the six birdie putts he made, Frost had an equal number finish on the lip of the cup. "I'm really putting very well. I'm comfortable, I'm patient, I'm going to take any chances I can," Frost said. "Five's definitely not insur- mountable, unless he plays well," Lehman said. "All David has to do is shoot a decent round, and no one will be able to catch him." Roberts said: "There are not a lot of holes out there where you can make a huge number. You'd have to be really unlucky much trouble. Si, I don't think we can count on David coming back to us." (Rtr). new MEMBUAT ground. Infosfort, a firm created by the sports ministry and Olympic Committee, collects revenue from advertising and other ven- tures to help Ukrainian teams competing in championships. Soccer and ice hockey teams -- oce finance by state institutions, the army and police -- are lining up joint ventures based in Ukraine to help make ends meet. Some have left the country al- together: pole vault world record holder Sergei Bubka, Ukraine's biggest disappointment in Barce- lona where he failed to clear a height, lives in Germany. But most Ukrainian athletes view the prospect of competing on their own at the Olympics as a chance to distinguish themselves and boost the prestige of their country. Disputes and misunderstan- dings with Russia are fresh in the minds of many officials. The most prominent involved selection of the artistic gymnas- tics team. Two Ukrainians who went on to win gold and bronze were initially passed over by Rus- sian coaches apparently intent on giving their own candidates a chance of acquiring top-level experience. President Kravchuk's order called for more Ukrainian cove- rage to redress the balance. But even he seemed to realise he was powerless to change everything for the better. The areas around the beach, hundred of years ago, used to be trading posts. They have found (pre-) historical sites just by accident around the areas. John: Really? Made: Yes, but again few people seem to have taken care about it, Those who care are the archeologist! John: What is the next resort? Made: A little bit to the south-east of Lovina is Bedugul, a moun- tain resort with cool and nice weather. This resort possesses rain forest, crater lakes and beautiful panorama. You can do water skiing or mountain trekking here. John: Further east is Kintamani, am I right? Made: You are. This resort offers the excitement of a living vol- cano, Mt. Batur. It is still active, you know, and at its foot there are lots of hot springs. There is a crater lake here, too. John: There are two resorts in the eastern tip of Bali; which are they? Made: They are Ujung and Candi Dasa. Ujung is the former wa- ter palace of the last Kingdom of Karangasem. It's a historic pa- lace site but unfortunately now it's become a complete ruin. Candi Dasa is just like the other beach resorts in Bali but it's unique; it's close to the traditional native village of Tenganan which lies behind hills. John: The small islands in the Nusa Penida group have attracted tourists, too, Made! Made: Yes, especially the small island Nusa Lembongan which is very suitable for surfing and snorkeling. You may consider the island as representing something primitive and simple. John: And over here is Ubud. Made: Yes, it is, and it is famous for its work of art, such as painting and carving. Ubud is also proud of its performing art, you know. John: Sanur is a beach resort, too, Made? Made: You're right. This is the place where the first international hotel was constructed. It has marked the beginning of the deve- lopment of other hotels and restaurants in the area. Now Sanur is an established tourist resort with all its facilities. John: The new Nusa Dua resort is at the southern tip, isn't it? Made: Yes, it's close to the airport. And the other two resorts are Jimbaran and Kuta. Jimbaran is just growing but Kuta is quite the opposite. Kuta has attracted foreign as well as domestic tou- rists in large numbers.
