Halaman 6 Bali Post SENIN, 26 OKTOBER 1992 SENIN, 26 OKTOB SPORTS Toronto Blue Jays Celebrate For Canada With A Latin Beat Atlanta The Toronto Blue Jays celebrated winning the first international World Series with a Latin beat, turning their locker room into a wild fiesta of champagne, salsa music and hugs and kisses. The club that had won three American League East divisional titles without reaching the World Series finally won a Major Lea- gue Baseball championship for Canada late Saturday night, and the team of U.S. and Caribbean players but not Canadians - re- joiced on behalf of their adopted country. Dave Winfield, the 41-year-old Manny Lee and Alfredo Griffin, as well as Columbus, Ohio-born Pat Borders, the Most Valuable Player of the Series. Players sprayed everybody in sight with champagne, and their wives and girlfriends kissed and hugged them jubilantly. Centre fielder Devon White, born in Jamaica but raised in the Bronx in New York City, said: Toronto manager Cito Gaston was happy to have erased the "choke" tag the Blue Jays recei- ved after losing three league playoffs, now winning the World Series in their first trip. "People -- and I mean some of you -- kept writing bad things about this team. We're three for three (winning the regular sea- son, American League playoffs easy. That's not Behind The Latest Twist the 11th inning was just enough for a 4-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves in Game six of the Series, said: "This is great for Canada. it's great for the city of Toronto. This is a great team." Winfield, who grounded out for the last out of the top of the ninth inning with Joe Carter on Se- cond, felt he had a narrow escape, since the never-say-die Braves scored a tying run in the bottom of the inning and threatened to add the game-winner. "After I failed to get the insu- rance run in the ninth inning, it seemed like it was fate that I would get the chance to cash the winning run," Winfield said. "I can't believe I got the most impor- tant hit here." The locker room was a wild one, even by the giddy standards of World Series celebrations. As the salsa music pumped through the room, Puerto Rican Roberto Alomar danced with Dominicans You have no idea how often I dreamed of winning the World Series. When I was traded to Ca- nada, I didn't want to come -- and look what happened." Club president Paul Beeston said: "My thoughts go to the guys in the clubhouse, the guys in the organisation and the fans in To- ronto. Forty-five thousand peo- ple were rooting for us in the sky- Dome tonight." Then the players doused their boss with cham- pagne. Pat Gillick, the architect of the team's success in its 16th year in the major leagues, was asked how it felt to be the first Cana- dian team to win the World Se- ries. The Montreal Expos, who joined the big leagues in 1969, have never reached the Series. "Without being arrogant, I al- ways thought that we would do it before the Expos," said Gillick. "They're a great organisation, but I always felt that way." "I'm going to enjoy this now," he said. "My daughter helped us by crying this afternoon with worry, and now she's crying tears of joy." Like many of his players, Gas- ton did not want to face a Game Seven with the Braves, who have now lost back-to-back World Se- ries. "It would have been very tough and it would have been a long night to come back here to morrow," said Gaston. Atlanta manager Bobby Cox, who was Toronto's skipper from 1982 through 1985, visited Gas- ton in the locker room and embra- ced the man he gave a start in major league coaching when he hired him as the Blue Jays' bat- ting instructor in 1982. Said Cox: "We had a great year. We played awfully good, awfully hard. We could have won with a couple breaks." "I don't have any comments about it. I said what I wanted to say about it and it's over with," Johnson told a news conference before he and his Los Angeles La- kers teammates were to play the Sacramento Kings in an exhibi- tion game. Friday's New York Newsday quoted a person close to Johnson as saying the Lakers guard had accused Detroit Pistons star Tho- mas of spreading a rumour that he had contracted the AIDS virus through homosexual contack. Thomas, who had established a tradition of kissing old friend and adversary Johnson on the cheek before games, adamantly denied the charges when reached by the newspaper. Johnson, who is returning to the National Basketball Associa- tion after missing all of last sea- son, repeatedly has said he con- tracted the virus through hetero- sexual contact. The issue came to attention on Tuesday when Johnson told re- porters that another NBA player was telling people that the La- kers star was bisexual. "There's a guy in this league, and I know who it is, who ran into a few people to try to insinuate that I was going both ways," said Johnson, who refused to identify the player. "These people called me up.... Different coaches got wind of what was going on and they cal- led me." Johnson, who led the United States to the gold medal in the Barcelona Olympics this sum- mer, said he confronted the player, who denied spreading the rumour. Johnson said their friendship is finished, saying, "You backstab. I'm gone." (Rtr). British Pit Closures Contrast With Caring Dutch Approach Amsterdam - The threat of massive pit closures in Britain has revived painful memories for some 55,000 Dutch miners who were laid off a quarter of a century ago when the Netherlands' coal in- dustry was shut down. But, it seems unemployment has a harsher face in Britain in the 1990s than in the welfare- minded Netherlands of the 1960s. Miner Theo klomp was 43 when he was forced to leave the coalface where he had worked for 28 years with his father and six brothers. He was retrained for factory work, and found new jobs until ill health hastened his reti- rement at 52. "I'm satisfied with my life, but I worry about the older ones in England," said Klomp, now 65. "They'll have a hard time wal- king around with their hands in their pockets. "I was in pain in my whole body when I started sitting down all day." The same market forces that threaten British coal with obli- vion buried the Dutch coal indus- try. Cheap gas discovered on Dutch territory combined with falling prices of imported coal made the Dutch product uneco- nomic. The Dutch mines, four of which were state-owned, were all in the southern province of Lim- burg. In the 1960s the region's economy depended on the pits. "It was a massive shock when they said they were going," said Arthur Spierts, a spokesman for the former state-owned mining company DSM NV. "The mines looked after you from the cradle to the grave." Entire communities depended on the pits that produced the "black gold" after thousands had frozen to death in the harsh win- ters of World War Two. Lopez turned the tide by knoc- king down Gamache in the 11th with a three-punch combination, two overhand rights and a finis- hing left hook. Gamache was on both knees at referee James Santa's six-count but was back on his feet at eight. Santa stopped it at 40 seconds of the 11th when Gamache was still wobbling. "In the (lightweight) division, I'm supposed to be old," Lopez said. "I'm 29 years olf. Do I fight like I'm 29?" Lopez improved his record to Marchers Confront Army Near 40-4-1. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said it was becoming increa- singly difficult for Pakistan to stop such marches. Pakistani and Azad Kashmir authorities used force twice this year to block attempts by the pro- independence Jammu and Kas- hmir Liberation Front to cross the line. "I fought courageously until the end," Gamache said. "I couldn't see the overhand rights. "I fought his fight, I should have boxed, used by speed. I got into his style. I think that's where my downfall was." Gamache, fighting his third world title bout, built his early lead by using a left jab and re- treating quickly after landing counters.
