2cm NEWS MAKER Sendai Mayor Toru Ishii Arrested For Alleged Involvement In Bribery STATE proscutors arrested Mayor Toru Ishii, of the nothern city of Sendai, on June 29 for alleged involvement in a bribery scam, television news reports showed. The reports said Ishii is alleged to have taken some 100 million yen ($950,000) in bribes from four construction firms. Japan's scandal - wracked ruling party, facing the wide pros- pect of defeat in July 18 polls, suffered yet another setback on Tuesday with the arrest of a conservative regional leader for sus- pected bribery. The governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), its popularity almost halved due to wide spread public anger over official cor- ruption, stands to lose heavily as a result of the latest scandal development. After raiding sendai city hall and Tokyo corporate offices, aut- horities arrested nine suspects -- Ishii, two of his aides, Hazama Corp Chan Shigeru Honda and President Akira Kagami, and four senior executives from Shimizu Corp, Nishimatsu Construc- tion and Mitsui Construction. Ishii, 67, will be charged on suspicion of taking same 100 mil- lion yen ($945,000) in payoffs from the firms in April 1992 in exchange for promosing to help them win the contracts, NHK public television and other media said. Ishii, a conservative who won election late last year with bac- king from the LDP and opposition groups, could have been see- king funds for his election bid, some reports said. The public works project, worth 100 billion yen ($945 million) over 10 years, involved redevelopment of an harbour, and buil- ding trade and distribution centres. The latest episode in Japan's political corruption saga puts the spotlight once again on ties between influential politicians and big business. The LDP's fallen paymaster, Shin Kanemaru, is alleged to have hidden away billions of yens (hundreds of millions of dol- lars) in payoffs, mostly from construction firms, in return for poli- tical favours. His trial will begen on July 22. Prosecutors, who refused comment on Tuesday's case in kee- ping with policy, discovered the Sendai link while checking cons- truction firms for their alleged payoffs to kanemaru over the past four months. More disclosures could follow. "Voters are fed up with corruption... this development will prompt them to switch their support from existing (ruling and opposition) groups to newly emerged parties," said politicies. The Gianyar style is reigning and imposing its norms of music, dance and even architecture on most of the other Kabupaten. In other parts of the island, though, there remain ot- her smaller centers which have kept some distinctive features. One of them is the district of Sa- wan, at the Northern foot of the Bedugul plateau, on the upper part of a small, albeit fertile coas- tal plain. Sawan's type of music has had its hours of glory when a gamelan group from the village promoted the Northern brand of Balinese music throughout Europe a few years ago. But Sawan does not only have good gamelan orchestras, it also has all the additional supportive trades. Foremost among them is gamelan smithery. The makers of gamelan in Bali are not just any ordinary people. They usually belong to a speciali- zed kinship group, the pande, whose trade is usually family run. Such a gamelan maker is Mr Made Widandra, 58, who along- side two colleagues and competi- tors, produces most of the musi- cal instruments for the Northern Balinese market. Bronte Shaping, Melting Made Widandra does not pro- duce only gamelan; he produces the whole range of instruments as well for the gong kebyar as well as for other types of orchestras such as the Gambuh flute orches- tra, the beleganjur cymbal or- chestra or the angklung bambu orchestra. As a smith and descen- dant of smiths, Made Widandra handles the most difficult part of the job, which is the shaping and melting of bronze, but, among his seven workers, are specialists of the various trades needed for the making of all these instruments, He has bamboo cutters for the making of flutes and the cutting and tuning of bamboo instru- ments as well as carvers for the decoration of the wooden frame of the bronze orchestra. The only instrument which he cannot make is the big goong of bronze. Whenever there is an order for a whole set, he has to order the big going from Java. Now He's Ready For The World Sydney- Steady Eddy has the sickest comedy act in Australia. He tells jokes about the handicapped and the disabled and has packed hou- ses rolling in the aisles. In just over a year his career as a comic in clubs and pubs has ta- ken off and Steady is now expor- ting his black routine abroad, ho- ping for similar success in New Zealand and Europe. Steady Eddy has no shame about ridiculing the afflicted be- cause he is disabled himself, born with cerebral palsy and institu- tionalised in a home as a child. He bills himself as the stand- up comic who can barely stand at all. On stage, his hunched body twists and jerks as he delivers withering one-liners. "My teachers used to say to me, 'Steady, you have got to be incon- spicuous to get into the mains- tream of society.' So every mor- ning a bus would come to pick me up with 'Spastic Centre' written on the side." And there's many more where that came from. "I really love being a spastic. The best thing is I can go to a party, sit on one beer all night, and still look like I have had a great time." Steady's comic career started against the wishes of his mother and his older sister, Lee, a come- dienne who now lives in Melbourne. Warehouse Worker He was a Sydney werehouse worker when he plucked up cou- rage to do a five-minute spot at the Comedy Store, a local nur- sery for would-be comics. It's a place where the audience is mer- ciless. If you die, the punters let you know it. Steady Eddy didn't die. Far from it. "They liked it, there was genuine laughter," he told Reuters. "My sister and my mother tried to talk me out of it, but I just got up and did five minutes and since then it's just got bigger and bigger," he said. role as host of a television chat show, and now an exhausting six sellout shows a week around the clubs. A video package sold out its first run of 10,000 copies earlier this year and 10,000 more will shortly go on sale. It includes two songs from his black repertoire, "Ready Steady Go" and "With Her I Don't Dribble". I "TV did wonders for my career; sold twice as many pens on the weekend," he joked. "which is good because I could afford a new wheelchair with bumper stickers like 'T'd Rather Be Walking." Serious Side But of course there is a serious side to the 24-year-old comedian who was born Chris Widdows and earned his nickname from his mates, "the normals" as he calls them, at his local surf club.
