2cm NEWS MAKER Italy's Bettino Craxi Moves Closer To Corruption Trial FORMER Italian Socialist leader Bettino Craxi moved a step closer on Tuesday to standing trial for corruption when a key member of the MP's jury examining his case came out in favour of lifting his parliamentary immunity. Roberto Pinza, a Christian Democrat, told reporters he would recommend that a parliamentary commission should vote to lift Craxi's immunity. The commission, which is not bound to follow Pinza's lead, will make its decision on Tuesday or Wednesday. If the vote goes against Craxi, the issue of his immunity goes to the full chamber. Former prime minister Craxi is under inquiry by Milan inves- tigating magistrates who want to put him on trial on charges of corruption and breaking party funding laws. Craxi, who resigned as Socialist leader last month, has denies the charges, claiming he is the victim of a legal vendetta. He has urged the commission not to lift his immunity from prosecution. He has hinted he will make potentially sensational revelations implicating other political leaders if he is forced to stand trial. (Rtr). The resolution also expressed council "readiness" to support the result of the elections for a constituent assembly which will lead to the formation of a new go- vernment "for all Cambodians" by September. "In voting for the resolution, we have committed ourselves to supporting only the government which will emerge from the elec- tions as the sole legitimate aut- hority for all of Cambodia," said U.S. Ambassador Madeleine Albright. But the resolution stopped short of recognising any future Cambodian government. "There comes a point when the process is in the hands of the Cambodians and if they start deviating from the peace agreements, we're not going to say that is all right," said one Western diplomat. China's delegate, Chen Jian, however, left open the hope the Khmer Rouge would participate at a future date. "Only when all the Cambodian participate fully in the peace pro- cess, can the success of the peace process in Cambodia be guaran- teed," he said. The Khmer Rouge, which holds about a fourth of the coun- try, has refused to join the May 23-27 election by allowing people in its region to register before the United Nations closed voter lists at the end of January. Khmer Rouge Isolated By strongly endorsing the peace process, the resolution ef- fectively isolated the Khmer Rouge, a move which could either lead to partition of the country or renewed fighting. The United Nations is spen- ding $1.4 billion annually on a peace-keeping force of 15,000 and close to 5,000 civilians. numbers. The Khmer Rouge, militarily the strongest faction in Cambo- dia, were held responsible for up to a million deaths when it ruled the country from 1975 to 1978. It sought total dissolution of the current Vietnamese-backed government in Phnom Penh be- fore the elections, although this was not in the peace agreement. The group also insists there are large numbers of Vietnamese forces still in the country. The resolution for the first time expresses concern to reports that "a small number of foreign military personnel" are serving with government forces in viola- tion of the peace agreements, and calls for the "immediate removal of all foreign forces, advisors of military personnel from Cambodia." The Statistics Bureau repor- ted that retail turnover, aided by post-Christmas sales, rose 4.2 per cent in January to Australian $8.1 billion ($5.7 billion). Economists had expected a rise of about 3,5 per cent. "The growth in retail trade is further evidence of the conti- nuing recovery in the Australian economy," Treasurer John Daw- kins said in a statement. Keating and Dawkins also reaffirmed their belief that inte- rest rates would fall after the March 13 election. Comments by Keating on Monday cast doubts on a cut. "Interest rate reductions are a possibility after the election," Keating told reporters in Mel- bourne. Dawkins also said a rate cut was possible, although a final decision would depend on the health of the Australian dollar. (Rtr). A mass suicide appears unli- kely, as it is contrary to the reli- gious beliefs of Koresh, who Ricks said does not want to fulfil his prophecy by taking his own life. (Reuter).
