Quality In Singles Controversy From Bonaly THE SINGLES events supplied the quality while Surya Bo- naly provided the controversy at the world figure skating championships. Elvis Stojko and Philippe Candeloro gave the men's event a "look into the future with a battle that produced the best show of the week. They left the skating world agog at the prospects of further duels which should continue right up to the 1998 Olympics when they both expect to be back in Japan at Nagano. The Canadian prevailed this time by beating Candeloro in both technical and free programme, just as he did at last month's Olympics when he was second with his French rival third. But Candeloro, uising soundtracks from The Godfather films in both his routines, was already plotting his revenge. He plans the rapid development of a quadruple jump or two to match Stojko's quad toe-triple toe combination here, and he will also try to put together another triple combination to go with his triple axel-triple toe loop. Viacheslay Zagorodniuk of Ukraine took the bronze medal and pushed the Olympic champion, Russian Alexei Uramanov, cut of the pushed the Olympic champion, Russian Alexei Urmanov, out of the medals into fourth place. Urmanov had an error-strewn week and fell trying'a quad in "the finale. "He was not depressed, just a little sad. But we have work to do to be more precise," his coach, Alexei Mishin, said. Yuko Sato gave Japan's fans cause for celebration with her women's title on Saturday though Bonaly almost stole the show with a petulant reaction to defeat. The 20-year-old French European champion found the loss hard to stomach after coming second a year ago and fourth in the Olympics last month. She hesitated before skating to the podium and had to be per- suaded onto it by International Skating Union president Olaf Poulsen, then she took her medal off during the Japanese natio- nal anthem. She said she left harshly treated to be left second again and wanted to make a statement to the judges. Sato's coach called her "unsportsmanlike" but the French ska- ting federation apologised on her behalf and the ISU decided not to impose any penalty on her. German Tanja Szewczenko, best known for colliding with Olympic champion Oksana Bajul in Norway last month, snat- ched third place by overcoming a crash into the barrier on Thur- sday that left her with a bandaged chin. "Oksana was not here but the wall was," she said. Russians Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov won the pairs at the end of an anxious time for Canadian defenders Isa- belle Brasseur and Lloyd Eisler because of Brasseur's cracked rib. It threatened to force their withdrawal, but Brasseur bravely hung on and the Canadians finished second, their fifth successive podium finish as they head now for retirement. The ice dance went withsome controversy to Russian Olympic champions Oksana Gritschuk and Evgeny Platov despite a fall by Platov and three minor technical infringements by him and his partner. French couple Sphie Moniotte and Pascal Lavanchy grabbed second place and said they would be gunning for the top next year. So will the third-placed Finns, Susanna Rahkamo and Petri Kokko. All thre ooppes will have to look over their shoulders, however, at fast-rising rivals from Belarus and Canada. (Rtr). Senin Umanis, 28 Maret 1994 Bali Post English Corner South Korea Bids For Chinese Help In Nuclear Impasse Seoul- South Korea's Foreign Minister joined his president Kim Young-sam in China on Sunday to mount a diplomatic bid to help defuse tension over North Korea's suspected nuclear weapons programme. Han Sung-joo told a news confer- nce in Seoul before leaving that he wanted China, Pyongyang's last ally, to go along with interna- tional efforts to persuade North Korea to abide by U.N. rules on inspections of its nuclear facilities. Han flew to Beijing to join Kim, who will meet Chinese President Jiang Zemin on Monday and Prime Minister Li Peng On Tuesday. But Han said he wanted the U.N. Security Council to give North Korea further breathing space to respect the Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty rather than adopt a resolution that might lead to punitive economic sanctions. The draft of a U.S. sponsored resolution, circulated to Security Council members on Friday, as- ked the U.N. nuclear watchdog International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to report within a month on its efforts to inspect North Korea's installations.. nuclear But Han said such a state- ment, rather than a full-blown resolution, would have a better chance of success. "It could be better that a statement be issued to induce the North Koreans to come forward for dialogue," he said. "If North Korea continues not to allow nuclear inspections even after the statement is issued, then China cannot but go along with U.N. resolutions." The IAEA, whose inspectors failed this month to gain the ac- cess they wanted to North Ko- rean atomic plants, last week censured Pyongyang for failing to cooperate. North Korea has said it would view U.N. sanctions as a declara- tion of war. China baulks at strongarm tactics, favoured by same U.S. of ficials, to get Pyongyang to allow inspections. South Korea, which would be the first to suffer from any aggressive moves by the North, is also against a stro- ngarm appraoch. Unification Minister Lee Yung-dug told South Korean state television on Sunday he ho- ped the nuclear issue would be settled through dialogue, plants to full IAEA inspections. Sout Korea, living in the sha- dow of North Korea's massive mi- litary machine, has put its 650,000-strong standing armed forces, aided by 36,000 American troops, on special alert. Pyongyang, too, has put its troops more than one million strong -- on alert and has stepped up military drills. South Korean officials said Kim and Han would ask China, a permanent Security member with the power of veto, to con- vince Pyongyang to follow Bei- jing's example of reform and open-door policies. After China, Han will fly to Washington on Tuesday to talks. with Secretary of State Warren Christopher, Defence Secretary William Perry and other officials. Perry said on Friday the Uni- ted States planned to put more sophisticated weapons in South Korea as a precaution against an attack by North Korea. Defensive Patriot missiles are due soon in South Korea to protect key sites around Seoul. But he said the South was ready to take all possible measu- res against the North along with the world community. Cina Wants South Korea As Balance To Japan Beijing- Readers of the People's Daily might well have mistaken China's official mouthpiece for a South Korean newspaper on Sunday -- three of its eight pages carried flashy advertisements by Korean firms. Daewoo, Hyundai, Goldstar and the Woobang group took ad- vantage of a visit by South Ko- rean President Kim Young-sam to China to show they want to blaze a trail across the country's industrial landscape. Since the two nations establis- hed diplomatic relations in Au- gust 1992, trade and investment have soared. Chinese figures show direct trade in 1993 was $9.08 billion, In Goa, The Carnival Seems Over And So Is Tradition Goa, India- As the dancers swayed out of view to a sensuous samba beat, Marina Sequeira wondered if her daughter would ever see a carni- val in Goa when she grows up. the curtain," says Father Chris- tovao Caldeira, rector of the Rac- hol seminary built by the Jesuits in 1610. He said vulgarities creeping into the carnival reflected the pressure on Goan society from tourism and foreign television channels recently allowed into Her father was a leader of the colourful parade that swept through Goa's capital Panjim on the first of three days of revelry India. before Lent, evoking memories of 451 years of Portuguese rule over Goa until India's takeover in 1961. "I'm not sure if my daughter will se all this when she grows up," said Sequeire wistfully, clut- ching her one-year-old child and watching the carnival along the waterfront. Mother and daughter had de- fied Goa's dominant Roman Cat- holic to atter the carni- val last mont, which marked an escalation in hostilities between the clerics and the state. State tourism authorities in- sist on holding and organising the carnival which the church wants banned. The church, once a pillar of Portuguess colonial rule, and Goa's elite converts to Roman Catholicism from Hinduism's highest caste the Brahmins -- believe the traditions of the Old World are being eroded by ra- pidly growing materialism. On the eve of the carnival Mon- signor Alberto Luis, director of "the Diocesan Service Centre, de- nounced it as commercial revelry and a sellout of Goa's women. "Women of dignity should leave the carnival alone to loose women and wayside girls," Luis thundered to the dismay of the faithful, who form a third of Goa's population of 1.3 million. The warning had some effect. Most participating women avoi- ded revealing clothes, and cou- ples danced chastely. But some give glimpses of the past, dancing provocatively to seductive latin rhythms. The bishop doesn't want us to go to the carnival... but we are here because it depends on us whether we want to be decent or not... just watching a carnival is not a sin," said analisa Fernan- des, a 19-year-old schoolgril wat- ching the parade. The clash of cultures started in the 1960s when hippies from the West sought refuge in Goa's idyl- lic beach lifestyle, built on the concept of susegado, the Portu- guese way of easy-does-it. Lazy days spent drinking feni, an alcoholic drink brewed from cashewnuts, and endless siestas were mixed with the drugs and free sexual habits of the hippies. In the 1970s lucrative jobs ope- ned up in the Middle East. Ear- nings sent home to Goa laid the foundations for its economic transformation. Then tourists spread Western ideas yet further. "There is drug use, sex exploi- tation in the carnival, it is behind ERAH JEANS THE ART OF FASHION Crisologo Furtado, an oral his- torian of Goa, expresses concern over the sharp increase in tourist arrivals, rising to an annua 150,000 from 8,371 over the past 20 years. This ma- kes China the third biggest ex- port market for South Korea, af- ter the United States and Japan -- and South Korea China's sixth higgest export market. South Korean investment in China at the end of last year was a contracted $960 million in 1,042 projects, and an actual $465 million in 646 projects, with more than half of these in 1993 alone. This made China the top destination for overseas South Korean investment. Many of the projects are small factories making textiles, gar- ments, metals, furniture and leather goods, but there are large-scale projects such as a ce- ment plant by Daewoo with in- vestment of almost $300 million and a plant making television parts in which Goldstar will put $140 million. An Asian diplomat said China especially welcomed investment from South Korea as a competitor with Japan. "While the Korean firms are technologically behind those from Japan, they provide loud competition and, the Chinese hope, will help to force Japanese firms to produce more advanced goods in their Chinese plants," he said. "But if North Korea had refor- med its economy as China has, many of these factories would not be in China but in North Korea. But it has failed to heed China's advice and reform, Pyongyang's loss is Beijing's gain." Beijing viewed the economies of China and South Korea as com- plementary and not competitive, the International Business new- spaper said on Saturday. China exported corn, cotton, raw silk, coal, crude oil and con- sumer goods to South Korea, and imported steel, machinery, elec- tronics and petrochemicals, it said. An official of the Beijing office of the Korea Trade Promotion said there were also 42 inves- tment projects by Chinese firms in South Korea and that within a few years China could become his country's biggest export market. But South Korean brands still have a long way to go to match goods from Japan and other ma- jor exporters, according to a sur- vey of 2,500 consumers published in the China Business Times on Saturday. If found only 13 percent of those surveyed had bought South Korean products and 56.3 per- cent said they were not sure what these products were. Of those that knew, the best known South Korean goods were Daewoo and Samsung cars, follo- wed by textiles and garments and electronic goods, including televi- sions and video recorders. (Rtr).
