Halaman 6 SPORTS Botha Prepares To Put His Boot Into All Blacks Johannesburg- Naas Botha is the sportsman even South Africans love to hate. According to Australian winger David Campese he is "arrogant." Others have attached far worse epithets throug- hout his lengthy rugby career. Yet this Saturday, Botha will have the country in the palm of his hand or, more accurately, the inside of his boot. As captain of the 'springboks in their long-awaited test re- match with the All Blacks, he will have an 80-minute platform which even Nelson Mandela or President De Klerk might covent. The arguments about Botha have raged ever since his test de- out in 1980. A prodigious kicking talent with a colourful personal life, his critics said he was one- dimensional and obsessed with using the boot. More recently, he went to play in Italy amid loud mutterings that rugby's amateur regulations were merely bits of paper litte- ring his sponsored car. Even worse, he took no notice. South Africa's return to the in- ternational rugby arena, delayed by the empty years of political turmoil, proves he is lucky as well. At 34, time is only just on his side and he accepts it. "It has been frustrating but at least I had the opportunity of playing 23 internatinals," said Botha. "It would have been since to have played 60 or 70 but I could easily have been in a periode when I didn't play any." A total of 268 points in the 23 matches he has played, including the four against the NZ Cavaliers in 1986, give a clue to what might have been, but Botha has never been a rugby romantic. "I don't think I'm that emotio- nal about it any more," he admit- ted, reflecting on the All Black battle to come. "At the end of day, it's still a team game and I need forwards to give me the ball. But I've been selected to do a job. I expect the locks to win the lineouts, and I'm sure they expect me to get the drop-kicks and penalties." Kicker Botha, married to South Af- rican long jumper Karen Botha who represented the Republic at the Barcelona Olympics, gained such a reputation as a kicker in the mid-1980s he went to the U.S to try his hand at gridiron foot- ball." He soon returned to South Af- rica and continues to pile up the points for his province Northern Transvaal. If Botha does do the business this weekend, New Zealanders can scarcely say the history books did not warn them. The All Blacks very first test in South Africa in 1924 ended in a 17-0 defeat caused almost enti- rely by the boot of Bennie Osler. In 1970 when New Zealand felt they were capable of winning a series in South Africa for the first time, they were undone by the goalkicking deeds of home ful- lback Ian McCallum. Six years Merdeka! Harum Semerbak Wangi 47 th Indonesiaku MA DEPARTMENT STORE BALI Parade FRENCH PARFUMS later, it was the prolific Gerald Bosch who carried on the tradi- tion, now faithfully maintained by Botha. His opponents, though, re- main uncomplimentary, notably Campese this week. Botha's res- ponse is swift and direct, like his Kicking. "I've been in Italy five years and played in four finals. He's only played in one. Work it out for yourself," he said. "I've never met an Australian who wasn't arrogant." His Future As for the future, Botha said: "I'm looking forward to a couple more games." "The main thing on Saturday is that every man must go on the field and do his job. If we do that and play 110 per cent, we're going to be in," he said. "As a country we're in-between at this stage. I don't want to say we're going to change the whole world by beating anyone on Sa- turday. But I'd like to think we can help the nation and the situa- tion. One voriferous spectator at Bloemfontein during the All Blacks visit last week put it sligh- tly more succiently. "You know who's going to beat the All Blacks for us," he said. "It's that man we all hate so much, Naas Botha." (Rtr). Wah! 20% DISCOUNT Tgl.10 s/d 25 Agustus '92 Bali Post Bali Post/Rtr. BIRTHDAY KISS-Basketball star and Olympic gold medalist Earvin "Magic" Johnson gets a birthday kiss from recording star Janet Jackson August 13 after press conference at birthday party held at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, Ca. Johnson turns 33 years old August 14. Sauers, Stadler Shoot 67, Share Lead St Louis, Missouri - Craig Stadler and Gene Sauers shot four-under-par 67s on Thursday to share a one- stroke lead in the first round of the BGA Championship. Stadler, playing his 15th PGA, and Sauers, playing his seventh, took advantage of excellent early morning conditions at Bellerive Country Club to top the field of 15th. The two were one shot in front of British Open champion Nick Faldo and fellow Americans Brian Claar and Jay Don Blake. Former Masters champion Stadler, winner of eight other events on the U.S. tour, bogeyed the second hole and then birdie five of the next six to go out in four under par. He balanced a birdie and a bogey on the more difficult back nine to catch Sauers, who had finished earlier. "The four-pars played a lot shorter on the front nine than on the back," said Stadler, who pre- pared for this championship by playing golf at home with his children. Stadler, who drove into Belle- rive's thick rough six times, was uncanny with his irons. His six birdie puts were all 10 feet or bess. Sauers, whose best finish in this event was 24th, set the pace with three birdies going out and offset two bogeys with birdies co- ming home. "I only hit two bad shots all day. I'm not surprised where I am," said Sauers, who has two seconds and a third on the U.S. tour this year. Faldo Faldo, one of the top favouri- tes, got off to a slow start. He bo- geyed the first hole, went birdie- bogey on the fourth and fifth, and then birdied seven and eight. He added birdies on the 404-yard 12th and her testing 222-yard 16th for his best start in this event since 1988, when he opened at four under and finis- hed tied for fifth, his best sho- wing in 10 years. "I didn't play as well as I would have liked but I'm happy to be at three under," Faldo said. "I'm up there, which is all I'm trying to do." Claar, a 33-year-old Califor- nian, started the day with three consecutive birdies and made the turn at four under, but then bo- geyed the 16th, his only blemish on the back nine, to finish at 68. Blake, who tied for 13th in this championship last year, played the front nine in three under and came home in even par with bir- dies on the 16th and 18th holes. Tied at 69 were Masters cham- pion Fred Couples, the ageless Raymond Floryd, Bob Estes, Russ Cochran, Robert Gamemez and Frank Nobilo of New Zea- land, playing his first U.S. PGA Championships.s Couples Couples who played in a "Grand Slam" grouping with Faldo and U.S. Open champion Tom Kite -- overcame a triple bo- gey six on the 165-yard third hole with three birdies on the front and two more on the back. He made his triples on the shortest hole on the course by knocking his tee shot into the pond guarding the green and then three putting. I'm thrilled to death," he said later. "After being three over af ter three holes. I thought I was going to shoot 80." Floyd, who turns 50 next month, birdied the 16th and 17th holes to move within one shot of New PANTHER the lead, but the two-time winner of this championship bogeyed the 18th to finish two back. Gamez, the only one of the lea- ders who played late in the day, also bogeyed the 454-yard 18th. The usually steady Kite was cruising along at one under after a birdie on the fith hole, but he went three over on the last two holes. He double bogeyed the 536-yard 17th, which is expected to be a key hole this week, and then he, too, bogeyed the 18th. The par-five 17th, which has a big pond in front of the green, was actually shortened for this tour- nament to tempt players into going for the green in two shots. The tragedy happened before the start of the Brazilian cham- pionship final second leg between Flamengo and Botafogo, two lo- cal teams, watched by 145,000 fans. Part of the fence at the front of an upper tier collapsed and fans plunged five metres onto the sea- ting below. Three died and more than 50 people were injured. A lot more had a lucky escape. "The accident happened before the match when the stadium was comparatively calm. Imagine if it had collapsed at the moment when Flamengo scored a goal," said former Brazil International Gerson, who played in the 1970 World Cup team. An official investigation said supporters pushing the fence caused the accident and absolved the authorities from blame. Others said the authorities were guilty by omission. Temple of Soccer For more than three decades, it was the temple of Brazilian soc- cer was Brazilian soccer was the Some of Pele's greatest mo- ments were witnessed there, un- cluding his 1,000th goal, scored in a club match for Santos against Vasco da Gama in 1969. The ground ranked alongside Sugar Loaf mountain and the statue of Christ as one of the sights of Rio. Calazans said the stadium began to lose some of its glitter in the early 1980s but the real dec- line began two years ago, when the Rio state government, which owns the ground, stopped doing even the most maintenance. basic The peeling paint, holes in the walls and pools of stagnant water are visible results of the neglect. There is no water in most of the toilets. More People At nearly every match, Brazi-, lian newspapers make allega- tions of "gate receipt evasion" saying that there were more ple in the stadium than officially announced. When the attendance was gi- ven during recent games, the crowd would jeer. "I'don know who the fraud- sters are or how the evasion works. But the authorities are guilty by omission and the clubs are guilty as well, because they never complain," Calazans said. The crowd for the first leg of the Brazilian championship fi- nal, when only a few gaps on the terraces were visible, was an- nounced as 117,000, leading one newspaper to ask: "Has the Ma- racana shrunk? Where could you have put another 80,000?" For the Jornal do Brazil new- spaper, the accident was symbol of all that as wrong with Brazil "from the carefree attitude for human life, the generalised rob- bery, the lack of security... to the irrensponsibility of the authori- When it rains heavily, the dressing-rooms are flooded -- ties." Defending champion John Daly disappointed his numerus fans by shooting a five-over-par 76. The shock winner of last year's chammpionship made three bogeys on each nine and had only one birdie on the day. Daly, who says he loves all the attention that goes with being a major champion, refused to go to the press tent after his round. "When you shoot five over par, there's nothing really to talk about," he told a tournament offi- cial. "I just didn't play very con- sistent. I couldn't find the hole all day."
