Halaman 6 Bali Post SENIN, 24 AGUSTUS 1992 SENIN, 24 AGUSTUS 19 SPORTS Beckenbauer Says Matthaeus To Return To Bayern Frankfurt- Lothar Matthaeus, captain of Germald Cup championship soccer team, will return to the EC Bayern Munich of the German Bundesliga, the club's vice president Franz Beckenbauer said on Saturday. Beckenbauer told the German te- levision SSAT1 that an agree- ment had been reached that would bring Matthaeus, 31, back to the club he left in 1988 for the lucrative Italian league. "We are actually in agreement, even for fer fee," Beckenbauer was quoted as saying in the interview. But Beckenbauer said a writ- ten aggreement had not yet been signed. "But we will take care of that next week," he added. He provided no financial de- tails. Matthaeus was named the World Football of 1990 after lea- ding Germany to the World Cup championship in 1990. He has played for Inter Milan in Italy since 1988, where his contract is said to be worth $3.3 per year. Romours that Matthaeus, who has been out of action since tea- ring a ligament in his right knee in April, would return to Bayern Munich have been swirling throughout the German and Ita- lian soccer leagues for weeks. Because of the knee injury, Matthaeus did not play in the Eu- Yopean ship in June, where Ger- many was upset in the final by Denmark. Matthaeus, who took much of the blame for Inter Milan's fai- lure to qualify for European championships last year, said as early as May 1991 that he would be leaving Milan. He said at the time he expected to Real Madrid. "Sooner or later they will see that I cannot be stopped from lea- ving," Matthaeus said then. "And what would Inter do with a player who is not happy?" Transfer On top of the $3.3 million sa- lary, Real was reported ready to pay Inter Milan an $8.8 million transfer. Because salaries in the German soccer league are a frac- tion of those paid in Italy, most of Germany's top soccer players have spent the prime of their ca- reers in Italy. Almost the entire German national team plays in. the Italian league. Matthaeus to Munich would not only be a tremendous boost for the Bavarians but for the German league as well. Berti Vogts, coach of the German national team, and many other leading soccer figu- res in Germany have long lamen- ted the exodus of top stars to Italy. Vogts has said he has tried, with little succes suade younger German stars to star to stay. "But when they pay net annual salaries up to three million marks ($1.7 million), I'm wasting my breath," Vogts said. Bayern Munich, which went through three trainers last sea- son to finish in tenth place, has been under pressure to return to its winys. After winning five championships between 1985 and 1990, it stumbled the last two years. Manager Uli Hoeness has res- ponded by spending 22 million marks ($15 million) to buy the club out of trouble. They have won the first two ga- mes of the season, beating 1991 day. (Rtr). CHRISTIE-British Christie Linford celebrates after he won the 100 meters with 9,99 at the Internatio- nal track and field meeting in Berlin's Olympic stadium on late August 21. Christie Heads Strong British Team London- Olympic champion Linford Christie was named on Friday to British men's team that selectors feel could win the athletics World Cup in Havana next month. The men's side to compete in the sport's biggest team event will be captained by the 100 me- tres gold medalist and will in- clude Colin jackson, John Regis and nine other individual Olym- pic finalists. With other countries see- mingly not taking the end-of- season event as seriosly, a Bri- tish success was already being forecast. Christie will defend the 100 metres crown he won in Barce- lona three years ago when the British men were third overall. Bigger news for the team was that European 200 metres cham- pion Regis has been persuaded to compete after insisting last week he was not interested in taking part. Selectors have also named 400 metres hurdle medallist Kriss Akabusi despite his recent insis- tence that he did not want to be considered. A team spokesman said he was hopeful Akabusi would change his mind. The eight-team event features representatives from Asia, Af- rica, Oceania, Europe and The Americas, as well as national si- des from Britain, the Common- wealth of Independent States and the United States, the reig- ning champions. "The USA have had real trouble putting out a de- cent side," said Ward. "In that light and with the side we're put- ting out, our aim is to win the whole thing and we think we can. Young Olympic revelations David Grindley in the 400 metres and Curtis Robb in the 800 were also named tobe with high jump finalist Steve Smith and promi- sing pole vaulter Neil Winter. Britain's men qualified for Ha- vana by finishing runners-up in last year's European Cup. (Rtr). By Sporting Home Draw Lisbon- Former England manager Bobby Robson was disappointed the failure of his new team Spor- ting to achieve more than a goal- less home draw at the start of the Portuguese football season on Saturday "If you don't score goals you don't win a match so you suffer," Robson said biter the match. "It was a bad game and a bad result," said Sporting captain Jorge Cadete after the match. "Tirsense came to Lisbon to play defensively and they even tually achieved their objective," he added. Juskoviak, who helped Poland win silver in barcelona unsucces- sfully to score four times in the first half, but all three of his hea- ders come close to the Tiesense net. "There were good opportuni- ties where he might have scored in the first half, but he is a player that needs good crosses and part of the game that was missing," Robson said. Juskoviak, who was top scorer in last month's Barcelona Olym- pics and Dutch defender Stanis- lav Valckz were both making their debut with Sporting. The Sporting players grew in- creasingly nervous towards the end of the match and three minu- tes from the final when Tir- sense's Brazilian striker Silvinho Paiva came within a whisker of scoring. But the ball was skillfully def- lected to a corner by Sporting's Croat keeper Tomislav ivkovic. Further Blow A further blow to Sporting fans was the government's decision to main stand of its stadium to rein- force its foundations, which some experts say are unsafe. The central stand of Alvalade stadium, which can seat 10,000 spectator, was decked with skull and crossbone banners and was guarded by police to prevent fans from inva. The club management insists that the stand is safe, but the aut- horities this week ordered it to be closed for reinforcement. Portuguese Cup holders Boa- vista meanwhile beat newly- promoted Belenenses at home 1-0 with a header by striker To Ze in the 66th minute. League champions Porto de- layed their opening match against Estoril until Tuesday due to their participation in a foo- ball tournament in Seville. (Rtr). Sampras And Courier Set For Showdown Indianapolis, Indiana P Defending champion Sampras clawed his way to a three-set vic- tory over Boris Becker and Jim Courier struggled past a pesky Todd Martin on Saturday as the top seeds set up a final round showdown at the U.S. Hardcourt tennis championships. Second seed Sampras rallied for a dramatic 6-7 6-2 7-6 win over Boris Becker as he conti- nued to play himself into top form ahead of the U.S. Open, which be- gins in nine days. Sampras, U.S. Open winner in 1990, will be going for back-to- back titles on Sunday after his victory at the ATP Champion- ships in Ohio last week. the 125th-ranked Martin and reach his first final since winning the French Open. "We practice a lot together and he's always tough. It's just a few points here and there," said Cou- rier, who took the tiebreaks 7-5 and 7-4 to keep Martin first final. "Today it went my way," Cou- rier said. "Tiebreakers are really a roll of the dice. Sampras and Becker battled fiercely for two hours and 28 mi- nutes in a rematch of last year's final here. Becker controlled the first set with an effective serve even though Sampras managed to take it to a tiebreak. Men and women used to carry their good on their shoulders or heads to the nearest market place. 9. Now people go to market places by buses or trucks but some still prefer going on foot. 10. Villagers do their shopping on the market day for their daily needs. Percakapan Seperti biasa John dan Made berbincang-bincang; kali ini tentang pasar tradisional. John: I see a lot of foreign tourits are interested in going to tradi- tional market places. They are eager to know what a traditional market looks like, Made. Can you tell me what sorts of markets there are. Made: If I may label them, there are mainly two kinds : the general purpose and the specialized ones. In the first they sell different sorts of things, from food stuff to clothing and hard wa- res; whereas in the second they sell specific articles, such as vege- tables and fruits, cattle, art products, pets, second hand things, etc. John: A market in the village is not open everyday, Made. It has a special day for business. Made You're right, John. Only markets in town do their busi- ness daily. Those in the villages are normally open every three days. Farmers from neigbouring villages go to the market to sell their farm produce. With the money they get they buy their daily needs and some money is saved for other needs. John: I see. But how do they go and carry their goods to the market? * Made: In the past they went on foot and carried their things on their shoulders or heads. But now as there are buses and trucks M they use this means of transportation. It's much handier and more economical, you know. John: The market must be very busy and crowded then with people buying and selling. Made: You bet it is. It is like a big meeting area with people of different walks of life. They need different things, too. You may compare it to a fair in your country. John: I understand it, Made. But I'd like to go and see one of them so I can feel the atmosphere. I really would like to experience it. It must be quite different from doing your shopping in a supermar- ket. Would you like to go with me, Made, one day? Made: I don't mind at all; let me know when you want to do it. John: Thanks, Made: sure I'll let you know beforehand. Coba Anda ceritera tentang pengalaman Anda pergi ke pasar tertentu untuk suatu keperluan tertentu pula. Pasti menarik diceriterakan. Selamat mencoba dan Good luck! The second-ranked Swede fought off three break points at 3-4 down in the final set -- two with well-timed aces -- to keep Forget from serving for the match. "I was in big trouble and it was good to get it," Edberg said. "I needed this one badly. I had lost to him the last three times," said Edberg, who held for 4-4 and then dropped just one point in the final two games. "I started out well, got a little sloppy in the middle and fortuna- tely made the big shots to sur- vive," Edberg said.
