"But this is the burden I hope to share with my co-recipient State President F.W. de Klerk," the African's leader told a nes conference. The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the prize to de Klerk and Mandela in recognition of their work dismantling apartheid. "I extend my hearlfelt congratulations for this illustrious award and hope that we can jointly work towards a future in which the children of South Africa can grow up with the right to a life full of op he said. "This coveled honour is a challenge to us all as co-equal compa- triots to so conduct ourselves that those who seek to foster racial and ethnic hatred and war are so isolated and canterized. "I dedicate this award to courageous people of my country, black and while, who have suffered and endured so much and pledge that in whatever time remains to me I will spare no effort to bring peace, freedom and justice for all to Africa," Mandela said. MINGGU WAGE, 17 OKTOBER 1993 Bali Post Pro-Yeltsin Block Starts Russian Election Campaign Moscow- Russia kicked off its parliamentary election campaign on Saturday when a major group backing President Boris Yeltsin held its founding congress promising economic stability and order if it wins. But the president failed to show up, saying that although he backed the aims of the group, cal- led Russia's Choice, he had to be seen to represent all Russians. Leading reformer Yegor Gai- dar, who returned to Yeltsin's ad- ministration last month not long before it put down a bloody rebe- lion on October 3-4, told about 1,000 delegates Russia's Choice could promise a better life only after the December 12 parlia- mentary vote. "This will be a party of order, of democratic and market order," he said in the meeting's hall, which was decorated with elec- tion posters showing reformist tsar Peter the Great on horse- back and with mock-ups of tradi- tional Russian landmarks such as Moscow's onion-domed St Ba- sil's Cathedral. The aim is to turn the bloc into a party. "We cannot offer a lot but we can promise a stable currency, stable legislation protecting pri- vate property and the distribu- tion of state funds to protect those in need," said Gaidar, a first deputy prime minister and the driving force behind the grou- ping and Yeltsin's market reform programme. Post-communist Russia suf- fers inflation, a large budget defi- cit and has embarked on a transi- tion to a Western-style economy. Power struggles, which culmi- nated in this month's bloodshed, have meant political instability and also hampered reforms. The chief of Yeltsin's adminis- tration, told the gathering the president sent his greetings to the congress and added Russia's Choice should become the "start of the consolidation of all democ- ratic forces in Russia". "Despite his political sympat- hies, he will not take part in to- day's congress," the administra- tion chief said Yeltsin felt he had to represent all Russia's 150 mil- lion people. Other Groupings Two other smaller groupings were holding similar congresses on Saturday. Yeltsin on Friday moved to strengthen his grip on power by ordering a referendum of Soviet constitution to be held on the same day as the vote for a new two-chamber legislature. The existing constitution was at the heart of the conflict with parliament, which Yeltsin di- sbanded on September 21. After a siege and standoff, forces stor- med the White House parliament building on October 4. Scores died and dozens were captured. But some rebels esca- ped through secret tunnels. The Security Ministry said it had captured one of the Krem- lin's most wanted men, hardline nationalist deputy Ilya Konstan- tinov, who fled the White House Security police arrested him wit- hout a struggle on Friday. He was not armed but had shaved off his beard to change his appearance. He is being held in Moscow's Le- fortovo prison, where other har- dline parliamentary leaders are incarcerated. On Friday, the prosecutors began presenting charges against Yeltsin's political foes, includings Parliament chairman Ruslan. Khasbulatov and sacked vice-president Alexander Rutskoi. The charges were for organi- sing mass disturbances, an of- fence carrying a maximum 15-year jail term. (Reuter) American Artist Exhibits Batik Paintings Denpasar (Bali Post) - American artist, Linda Kaun, currently living in Yogyakarta, opened her month-long exhibi- tion of batik paintings and mixed media works entitled, "Passages and Spirit Guardians," at the Se- niwati Sanggar, Ubud, Bali, on October 9, 1993. Located on Jl. Sriwedari No. 5, Banjar Taman, Seniwati Gallery and Sanggar are devoted to collecting and pro- moting the work of women ar- tists. The exhibition has been scheduled to continue through November 6, 1993. The batik paintings and mixed media works in the exhibition in- vestigate the idea of the passages we all make throughout our lives, opening doorways onto new vis- tas both inner and outer, leading to the realm of the spirit. Nature is the source of inspiration but this source is often used in a sym bolic way. Through the study of ancient native teachings from all over the world: the Americas, Old Europe, and Asia, we see the con- nection between the world of na- ture and the world of spirit. The works in the exhibition explore this connection. For example, through symbols from nature, the "Spirit Guardians of the Four Directions" express the meaning behind the north, south, east and west as understood in these an- cient teachings. In both "Inner Passage" and "Come Out, Come Out, Whoever You Are," the jour- ney is an inner one, passing through the layers, the masks, to seek the essential truth within. Fine Art Medium A self-taught artist, Linda Kaun has been working in the ba- tik medium since 1975. Because of the long tradition of batik as a craft in Indonesia, it is still not often thought of as a fine art me- dium like oils, acrylics or water- colors. Though there are a few In- donesian artists using batik in this way, most batik paintings are still produced very quickly for the tourist trade. "I think because the so-called Western artists are not tied to the traditions of batik, they seem to be freer to explore the medium as fine art. They also bring their more individualistic attitudes to their work leading them to create works of a more personal na- ture," states the artist. Linda Kaun has exhibited her work in Los Angeles and San Francisco, lead numerous work- shops in the Los Angeles area and Alaska and was an instruc- tor at the Brooks Colleger of Fas- hion Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles for four years. "In Sh'allah" is a monumental fresco of the horrors of war, en- compassing the worst -- and best -- of which man is capable. The Antibes jury hailed it as a "mo- dern Iliad".
