The Supreme Court on Friday ordered that Phoolan Devi be freed on parole after the newly elected government of northern Uttar Pradesh said it would withdraw the charges. Phoolan was released after providing a bond of 50,000 rupees ($1,613). She went to a relative's home where she will be given police protection. The court ordered the protection after Phoolan's lawyer said. she feared for her life and did not want to return to Uttar Pradesh. An independent news agency, Postfactum, reported that Rus- sian paratroop forces had laid down the condition in a statement. It said the paratroops were also insisting that no Russian mi- litary contingent could be sent to Sarajevo until the Bosnian Serbs had completed the withrawal of heavy weapons and put them un- der U.N. control. The statement represented an intrusion by the military in the domain of foreign policy, but offi- cial spokesman were at pains to deny any change in Russia's position. "You can throw out this state- ment, because it doesn't corres- pond to the truth," a defence mi- nistry spokesman said. Asked if he meant the para- troop had commited a mistake forbeing for authorised to make such a declaration, he replied: "Of course. There's simply been a mistake." Russian had not set down any condition for sending peacekee- ping forces, he added. "I don't think it's worth paying special attention to this state- ment," another government offi- cial said. "Maybe this is a mis- take. I don't know at what level this was issued. Anatoly Krasikov, a spo- kesman for President Boris Yel- tsin, said he had not seen the sta- tement and added: "I'm not con- viced this can be a genuine document." The spokesman's sta- tement was available at para- troops headquarters in Moscow. Russian conservatives, poin- ting to Moscow's traditional links with their fellow Orthodox Serbs, have demanded that the government stand up to the West and adopt more assertive role in defence of Slav interestes. There were parallels between the position of radicals advoca- ting a Greater Serbia and that of Russian nationalist who seek to re-assert Moscow's influence over the now-independet repub- lics of the former Soviet Union. It is no coincidence that ex- treme nationalist Vladimir Zhiri- novsky, who wants to restore the Russian empire within Soviet borders, has led the mostly fier- cely pro-Serb position. The Russian armed forces newspaper, Krasnaya Zvezda (Red Star), said on Saturday that the diplomatic breakthrough un- derlined Russia's "great power" status in the world. Phoolan told reporters she had not committed any crimes. She refused to answer questions about whether she would go into polities or marry. Police had alleged that Phoolan became the leader of a gang of bandits to avenge a mass rape in her village of lawcaste Hindus. She was one of the victims. She was blamed for killing 18 people in a village near the Uttar Pradesh town of Kanpur. All were high-caste and believed to have been directly or indirectly involved with her rape.. Phoolan has denied the killing. Once behind bars she became a filk hero for low-caste Hindus, symbolising their fight against oppression by higher social groups. Her life story inspired books and films. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav announ- ced last month he was withdrawing the charges, saying Phoolan had been punished. Political analysts said the move was clearly aimed at pleasing Yadav's supporters, many of whom are low-caste Hindus. Ame- rican speed skater Dan Jansen always believed he was the best spinter in the world. After seizing his last chance for Olympic gold on Friday, and smashing the 1,000 metre record into the bargain, he can hang up his blades knowing that he was right. "It's an unbelievable relief," said Jansen "It's over, and it's fi- nally got a happy ending." Jansen came fourth in the 500 metres final in the Sarajevo Ga- mes of 1984.
