MINGGU, 18 APRIL 1993 Bali Post Palestinians Want Israeli Concession In Writing Damascus - Palestinians want written concessions from Israel before they will agree to go to the next round of Middle East peace talks in Washington on Tuesday, a senior Palestinian official said on Saturday. Saleh Ra'fat, a member of the al council, said Arab foreign mi- nisters in Damascus were discus- sing demands for measures in- cluding a quick return of Palesti- nian deportees and an end to Israel's two-week-old closure of the West Bank Gaza Strip. "If they give us these demands before April 20 we will go to the talks. If they delay the positive response we will postpone our participation," he said. Ra'fat said offers made by Is- rael and the United tates to re- sume the 17-month-old talks, suspended following Israel's De- cember expulsion of 415 Palesti- nians, were not enough. He said Palestinian delegates Faisal al-Husseini and Haidar Ai had asked the United States to postpone the talks because Pales- timians were not satisfied. In Tunis, a senior Palestine Li- beration Organisation official said the foreign ministers of Sy- ria, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt and the PLO's foreign affairs chief were discussing a 10-day delay to allow for mortations. However, sources close to the Damascus meeting said Egypt was arguing that no more conces- sions could be expected until the Arabs said they were willing to go. They said Lebanon and Jordan agreed with Egypt but Syria was not yet convinced. Palestinians' Demands Ra'fat said Palestinians wan- ted copies of the Israeli written concessions to be deposited with the United States and Jordania, the co-sponsor of the peace talks. Resolution 799 calling for the return of the de- portees, and to give a timetable for the quick return of the remai- ning 396 Palestinians from south. -- Commitments to return a si- zeable number of other Palesti- nians expelled since 1967, to end the closure of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and to stop human rights violations in the occupied territories. -- A pledge that Israel is com- mitted to U.N. Resolutions 242 and 3nding Israel's withdrawal from occupied land, as terms of reference for the peace process. Ra'fat said the consensus was that either all or none of the Arab participants would go Washington. to "We are not seeking withdra- wal from the talks. We are not seeking suspension of the talks. Ouris to take part in these nego- tiations but we can not go while our people in the occupied territo- ries are under blockade and are being subjected to all sorts of re- pression," he said. Conference sources said the United States was in contact with the Arab delegations and had been urging them to attend the next round of negotiations. Egypt, the only Arab state offi- cially at peace with Israel has been negotiating with the United States and Israel for concessions to ensure the peace talks resume on schedule on April 27. (Reuter). Shuttle Discovery Lands Safely Cape Canaveral - The shuttle Discovery landed safely in Florida on Saturday af- ter nine days in space studying Earth's diminishing ozone layer. Delayed a day by stormy weat- her, Discovery touched the earth with five astronauts aboard at 7:37 a.m. EDT (1137 GMT) at the Kennedy Space Centre. After 148 orbits and a voyage of 3.8 million miles, the winged spaceship returned to where it was launched on April 8 on the second of eight missions NASA plans to fly this year. "Discovery's crew returns with a bounty of new knowledge of the sun, our home planet and its fra- gile atmosphere," said Jeff Carr, one of the astronauts. Bali Needs An Heritage Society ONE of the most fascinating aspects of Bali, if too little often noticed in the tourism industry, is the extraordinary order of its traditional human environment. Not only are ricefields a wonder- ful display of a regular human hand in the otherwise lush tropi- cal nature, but architecture Discovery's approach to the At- lantic coast spaceport minutes before the 103-tonne ship glided to a 219 mph (352 kph) toucha- down with Marine Colone Ken- neth Cameron at the controls. Discovery's landing cleared th shuttle Columbia's second launch attempt on a science flight chartered by Germany. Co- lumbia was grounded by an engine shutdown March 22. If, as the gods do, we look at Bali from high above the ground -- from an helicopter -- one cannot fail to be impressed by the regula- rity of houses, temples and villa- ges. Houses are all identical and strikingly parallel in lay-out, with family temples, kitchens and rooms occupying the same relative position in the walled compound. Large temples, like- wise, have all the same structure and all their main shrines in the same East-Mountainward (kaja- kangin) corner; and villages all have the same banyan tree in the vicinity of the similarly located princely mansion. More than any of the so-called tourism "objects" vaunted by the tourism industry, it is in this architecture and in the way it integrates with the surrounding nature that lies the genuine charm of Bali. But Balinese old architecture is threatened by death: The Bali- nese themselves are putting it to death. Tripartite Structure The Balinese base their tradi- tional architecture on a theory of balance between man, God, and nature called the Tri Hita Ka- rana. Man, in other words, as a microcosm (Bhwana Alit), is ex- pected to insert himself in the en- vironment -- hence architecture -- in a way which is in conformity with the order of the larger world macrocosm (Bhwana Agung). There ensues rules according to which architecture and its com- ponents as well as urbanism lay-out must have a tripartite structure similar to that of both the world and man, with three le- new Gianyar style does not have vels: godly/head; human/torso the decorative charm and imagi- and demonic/lower body. Genuine Conservation Policy One of the reasons of this state All this would be fine, indeed, if one aspect of the Tri Hita Ka- rana had not been overlooked: of things is that there is no ge- building materials. To try to change this situa- tion is to run against strong poli- tical opposition from religious groups. When, for example, the Indonesian government tried last year to convert the "Mother Temple of Besakih into a Cultu- ral Park (Cagar Budaya), all the Balinese protested as they saw it as an infringement on their reli- gious liberties. Cairo - A German archaeologist de- nied a report on Friday that a bu- rial which might hold untold treasures had been discovered deep inside Egypt's Great Pyra- mid of Cheops. Rainer Stadelmann said a team of archeologists, using a ro- bot, had found a long passage leafrom a chamber in the centre of the pyramid. But the passage was for the soul of the dead pharaoh to pass from the chamber into the skies and the afterlife, he said. Too small for humans even to crawl through, said Stadelmann, who is director of German Ar- chaeological Institute in Cairo. Britain's Independent new- spaper said the team had found a secret chamber which some ex- perts believed might contain the mummy of the Pharaoh Cheops anres "every bit as stunning as that of Tutankhamen's". "I don't know how this story happened but I can tell you this is very annoying," Stadelmann told Reuters by telephone. Cheops is the largest of the three great pyramids which are the last surviving seven wonders ofent world. It stands about 480 feet (145 meters) high and covers 13 acres of ground. Stadelmann said the tiny video-equipped robot, designed by robotics expert Rudolf Gan- tenbrink, climbed up a passage 20 cms (8 inches) square from the Chamber of Dreams in the heart of the pyramid. fore coming to a stone blocking The Independent said the stone covered the entrance to the secret chamber. But Stadelmann said since the passage was a "mo- del" never designed for human use such a stone was not unusual. It did not conceal any chamber, he said. "There is still other chamber," he added. "This passage has ne- ver been used or seen by humans." The pharaoh's burial chamber was looted about 2,000 B.C., 700 years after his death, although his mummy survived until the Middle Ages, Stadelmann said. He said there had never been any treasures found in pyramids, unlike burial chambers in the Valley of the Kings at Luxor, where the young pharaoh Tuten- The passage was previously khamen's golden death mask lay thought to be eight meters undiscovered for 3,000 years un- (yerds) long but the robot climbed til an archaeological expedition 60 meters along the passage be- in 1922.
