Color Rendition Chart 1993 ne NEWS MAKER Boris Yeltsin Hails Black Sea Fleet Agreement PRESIDENT Boris Yeltsin hailed Ukraine's agreement to hand over its half of the shared Black Sea Fleet, saying on Satur- day that Russia could not lose from the unexpected decision by Kiev. Ukrainian leader Leonid Kravchuk made the concessions at a summit on Friday in the Crimea peninsula, forced by looming bankruptcy to toe Moscow's line. The two presidents agreed Rus- sia wold buy out Ukraine's half of the 300-vessel fleet. Kiev owes Moscow $2.5 billion, mostly for Russian gas and oil supplies. The prices of both items have soared recently. We proposed they give us their part of the Black Sea Fleet, and then there will be a Russian Black Sea Fleet," Yeltsin told Rus- sian television. "We can wipe out (their) debts... to a greater or lesser degree. It will have to be reckoned up. But we have done our own reckoning already. We aren't losing by it, and we'll have our own fleet," he added. The fleet agreement still has to be ratified by both countries parliaments. It overrules an earlier accord under which the 300 ex-Soviet ships be jointly commanded until 1995. Nationalists in Ukraine see a continued stake in the fleet as a key part of their post-Soviet independence and are likely to op- pose Kravchuk's handover. But jubilant Yeltsin supporters and Russian military men were full of praise for the move. Yeltsin's press secretary, Vyacheslav Kostikov, in a statement released by Itar-Tass news agency, said it showed only the presi- dent was capable of "realistically and efficiently stand up for the national interest of Russia". "(It) opens the way to a civilised settlement of all the problems between the Russian Federation and Ukraine," Tass quoted De- fence Minister Pavel Grachev as saying. Denpasar, 4 September 1993 ttd Keluarga K. 1994 MINGGU, 5 SEPTEMBER 1993 Bali Post English Corner Dream Comes True As Pope Heads For Baltics Vilnius- Pope John Paul heads for Lithuania on Saturday on a journey he dreamed of for years but never expected to make to the countries of the former Soviet Union. An Alitalia MD-80 plane car- rying the pontiff from Rome was due to touch down in Vilnius at 3 p.m. (1200 GMT) at the start of a week-long trip to the Baltic sta- tes made possible by the collapse of Soviet communism. Yellow and white Vatican flags fluttered along the eight-km (five-mile) route, which the Pope was due to travel into central Vilnius. Thousands of green- uniformed police lined the road and patrolled the narrow streets around the white classical Vil- nius cathedral where he was due to meet priests and seminary students. For Lithuanians, his visit is the high spot of a week that saw the withdrawal of the last former Soviet army unit from their terri- tory, ending half a century of do- reign occupation. The people of this mainly Roman Catholic country look to the pontiff for encouragement and support as they struggle against economic hardship to re- build Lithuania as a democratic country. Emerging From Forced Atheism "Those people have emerged from the tunnel of forced at- heism," the Pope said of the three Baltic nations, which until 1991 formed part of the Soviet Union, where religious practice was suppressed. With the suppression of the church's influence, a great deal of spirituality was lost," Lit- huanian Prime Minister Adolfas Slezevicius said this week. "I believe the smile of the Pope, and his hand raised in blessing, will inspire the hearts of Lithua- nians with kindness, will unite all of us and reconcile us." The newspaper Lietuvos Rytas said the Pope would find in Lit- huania a country in confusion and transition rather than a land of deep Catholic faith. "John Paul II is setting foot at the crossroads and we are stan- ding at the crossroads as we meet him," it said. The trenchant independent daily Respublika has taken a sceptical view of the Pope's visit and questioned how much it will cost the stretched government budget. In an article on Saturday it as- ked ironically what would hap- pen if the Pope took a detour from the picturesque shrines and churches of the mediaeval town centre and visited instead the shabby apartments nearby. The Pope will spend four full days in Lithuania before travel- ling to Latvia and Estonia, which Catholic have smaller communities. Pope's Massage Thousands of Catholics from Ukraine and Belarus, as well as the Pope's native Poland, are li- kely to travel to hear his message. The pontiff may well feel a spe- cial affinity for Lithuania, which borders Poland and formed a single kingdom with it in the Middle Ages. Vilnius, the capital, was part of Poland as recently as 1939 Several newspapers noted the Lithuanian ancestry of the Pope's mother Emilija and said a portrait of her by a Lithuanian artist would be presented to him during his trip. In a greeting to the people of Lithuania, published by the new- spaper Lietuvos Aidas on Friday, John Paul said he had looked for- ward to this pilrimage since his first days as Pope. 1978 Dream Back in 1978, the year of his election, the dream appeared an impossible one. In the following decade, Soviet authorities refused several papal requests to visit Lithuania, fea- ring that he would stir nationa- list and anti-communist feeling as he had in Poland. "All Catholics of Central and Eastern Europe are looking at you, full of hope and faith," the Pope's message said. "I will come to you and your neighbours the Latvians and Es- tonians as a friend and shepherd." In Vilnius, the Pope will pay tribute at the graves of 13 natio- nalist demonstrators killed by Soviet troops in January 1991 during a crackdown on the inde- pendence movement. Other engagements include an open air mass and talks with Pre- sident Algirdas Brazauskas. (Reuter) Sihanouk Rejects Crown Phnom Penh. Cambodian head of state Prince Norodom Sihanouk threa- tened on Saturday to cut off rela- tions with the United Nations af- ter earlier refusing to accept his old position as king, a gover- nment spokesman said. Coalition government spo- kesman Khieu Kanharith said Sihanouk sent faxes from Beijing saying also that he will stay in China until he gets a written oath from the National Assembly ma- king him head of state, without elaborating on what form he would like that leadership to take. Sihanouk was due to come back from his trip abroad, which included a long stay in North Ko- rea, on September 15. He gave no explanation for his decision but Western analysts said he may be accusing the U.N. Transitional Authority in Cam- bodia (UNTAC) of implying it only accepted the reinstitution of a monarchy if it had a circumscri- bed role. The U.N. Peacekeeping opera- tion, which organised national elections in May, denied this. "UNTAC is not opposed to any solutions that Cambodians will want," Said U.N. Spokesman Eric Falt. "The role of Prince Si- hanouk is clearly fundamental. We have repeatedly stressed the importance of his role." Surprise Announcement Kanharith declined to com- ment on the surprise announce- ments, saying only that the go- vernment side, which includes the pro-royalist party headed by Sihanouk's eldest son, Prince No- rodom Ranariddh, was discus- sing the matter. "We are just waiting and di- scussing," he said. Kanharith represents the side of the former ruling party, the Cambodian People's Party, in the interim coalition after the roya- lists won a narrow but indecisive victory in the election. Sihanouk, king until he abdi- cated in 1955, surprised obser- vers earlier in the day by announ- cing he was against the idea of the country becoming a constitu- tional monarchy. Just hours before, Cambodia's two co-presidents had said Siha- nouk would be king after discus- sions with him in Pyongyang. "My father will be king," Rana- riddh, told after returning from the talks on Friday night. Sihanouk has repeatedly said he would never accept the throne again but he has acquired a repu- tation in 50 years in politics for abrupt changes of tack which baffle even his supporters. Cambodia's Constitution Ranariddh's royalist party said earlier on Saturday they would continue to pursue Siha- nouk to persuade him to be king despite his calls for a constitution that was neither monarchic or Mengucapkan Selamat dan Sukses Atas dilantiknya: Bapak Prof. dr. "I beg you to renounce the re- establishment of the monarchy and my nominaton as king of Cambodia and to continue the initial project of our constitution which is neither monarchistic or republican," It said. Sihanouk's message to the na- tional assembly and government dated Saturday said that Cambo- dians had still not resolved the problem of the continuing guer- rilla insurgency from the Khmer Rouge, who refused to take part in the elections, and should not create another serious problem with a controversy over whether to have a monarchy or a republic. Rapturous Fans Greet Jackson Taipei- Singer Michael Jackson took the stage at a Taipei sports sta- dium on Saturday for one of the biggest pop concerts in Taiwan's history, attended by 40,000 fans. The star, dogged by health problems and allegations of child sex abuse, received a rapturous welcome as the concert opened with fireworks, lasers and smoke. Clad in a black-and-gold body stocking, Jackson threw his hat into the crowd and hugged a sob- bing young Taiwanese woman who was allowed briefly on stage. It was the first of two concerts in Taiwan on Jackson's "Dange- rous" world tour. Earlier, in Bangkok and Singapore, he pos- tponed three concerts and once collapsed backstage. His doctor said he was suffe- ring from dehydration and mi- graine, denying there was any link to stress from the sex allega- tions in the United States. Jackson's older brother Jer- maine, who arrived in Taipei with his parents and three other family members on Friday, told reporters on Saturday Jackson was in good health. Los Angeles police are investi- gating statements by a 13-year- old boy that he was abused by Jackson during a four-month relationship. Jackson has denied the allega- tions and his spokesmen have said they are art of a $20 million blackmail attempt. The singer was scheduled to give his second Taipei concert on Monday before flying on to Japan. (Reuter) MENGUCAPKAN SELAMAT Atas dilantiknya Bapak Prof. dr. Ida Bagus Oka Sebagai Gubernur KDH. Tk. The Prao Maker From Jimbaran UNTIL these last years, Jim- baran used to be a quiet village of fishermen with one of the most beautiful beaches of the island, just five minutes away from the airport. International hotels have been built in the last too years and the fishermen are quic- kly adapting to new jobs: in the future, they will not so much go fishing as take tourists around the bay in perahu for a fee. So- mething has remained uncha- nged, though: there still exists people in the village who are ex- pert at perahu making. One of these craftmen is I Made Longgor, from Jimbaran, an old man who has fathered eight children and has as many grandchildrend.
