Winfield stroked a ninth-inning RBI single to become the 19th player in major-league history across the 3,000-hit marker and help keep the Twins alive as Minnesota went on to a three-run rally in the bottom of the 13th for a 5-4 comeback victory over the Oakland Athletics. Winfield's grounder to left in the nith off Oakland ace Dennis Eckersley earned him a standing ovation at the Metrodome. Winfield came into the game needing two hits to reach the plateau. He got his 2,999th hit on a high infield chop in the se- venth. He wound up going 2-for-5 in the game. The 41-year-old Winfield joined George Brett of the Kansas City Royals and Robin Yount of the Milwaukee Brewers as the only active players to get 3,000. Winfield is the fifth player in major-league history to combine 3,000 hits and 400 homers, joining Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Stan Musial and Carl Yastrzemski. Oakland led 4-2 in the 13th on Dave Henderson's two-run double, but Minnesota scored three times in the inning to win the game. Lenny Webster led off the inning with a walk off John Briscoe, Vince Horseman came in and struck out Scott Stahoviak. Roger Smithberg relieved and gave up an RBI double to Chuck Knob- lauch, who went to third on a wild pitch. After a walk to Dennis Hocking, Pat Meares grounded out and Knoblauch scored. Kirby Puckett was intentionally walked and Chip Hale single in the game-winning run. The Twins had tied the game in the ninth with two runs on RBI singles by Winfield and Stahoviak. Mike Hartley (1-2) got the win and Smithberg (1-1) took the loss. (Reuter) Sabtu Kliwon, 18 September 1993 Bali Post English Corner The Tragic Story Of A Fallen God IT is very hard indeed to believe that a God has fallen, and the one responsible for it is just a big "baby" How can it be explained to the man on the steet?. It happened once, that a young man with a baby face came to a certain elderly man whom he knew by name and through the informations of others. Physically, the young man was a giant by local standard. To the elderly fellow, he introduced himself as son of a teacher whom the former was acquainted with. The first meeting went smoothly, as both people respected each ot- her, probably because each would not be outvied in the matter of be- nevolence. So, the following mee- tings were characterized by a clo- ser friendship based on humani- tarian principle and mutual help. In the eyes of the younger fellow whose name was Dulkamid - his newly-found "hero" was worthy of a patriarchal veneration owing to his intellectual exploits told by many. Dulkamid, a student of a private university in Denpasar, was in the beginning so deeply impressed by the hero's fatherly and wise treatment to him. "You are my God", the young man told the old man one day. "But, on what grounds do you dare to say it?" asked the hero. "Well, you deserve the epithet, as you are real savant and at same time a saint". "Hey, don't be so fast. You can call me God only af- ter you have developed yourself and reached the level of a mature and independant manhood. This means that you have to struggle for intellectual as well as social maturity. I should say, in your present condition, you are still a completely dependant baby who is suckling at your mother's breasts". Dulkamid was dum- bfounded upon hearing this unexpectable remark. But owing to his infantile capacity of thin- king, the big baby simply gave a broad smile. To the old man's surprise and inquietedu, Dulkamid proclai- med the patriarch's godhead eve- rytime he met acquaintances. He was so proud of his merit in de- fying the old man. "You know", as he always said, "I call him God because he meets the require- ment of being a real God. He knows a lot of things. He even knows what is going to occur in the future. He forbade me to go to Semarang once. I obeyed him. And you know, what happened? Two days afterwards, I got a school text. Imagine, how terrible it would have been for me if I had happened to leave Denpasar. I was lucky indeed, what he had suggested me to cancel my plan and I had followed it". Another time, he said: "I am happy to have raised him to the position and ho- nor of a God. Nobody else could do this, but me". The old man's divinity crum- bled, however, very soon, as if it were only an ephimeral kingdom toppled down by insurrection. Dulkamid, the actual author of the drama, got bored with the God, because he learned later on that the God he had invented did not act like one. The God was so intractable and even intolerable. He criticized Dulkamid too much, upon learning that the lat- ter created him for a completely different purpose: One who ser- ved as an ideal father who would regard Dulkamid as a lovable and intelligent person! The old man could not comply with the young man's wishes, as he knew exactly that the facts were totally against Dulkamid's pretentious veneration. Dulka- mid was very soon dicovered by the people communicating with him as a blood curdling beast, ready to pounce on its prey, eve- rytime he is prodded by words or doing that he understood as da- maging his intended, sacrosanct privilege to be the most perfect Kid ever alive on earth. By inven- ting a perfect God, he wished to be invented in return as a perfect kid by the God. But, his God pro- ved to be a disappointing. The climax of the story was that one day, he scolded the God furiously and menacingly: "Why are you childing me all the time? Am I destined to be condemned and shun by everybody?". The God, who had anticipated this re- bellious pronunciamento, left the scene, for he was so sure of his ef- ficacious curative treatment on the semi-chaotic state of mind of the young fellow. It should be the silence therapy. Do not talk to sick kid. By the time the mani- festo of denouncement of the old man's godhead was said, the God realized that he was only a fallen God, after a short period of being an erring God. At home, the old man wondered if he had judget the young fellow from the wrong perspective. After a long time of musing, he decided not to say anything about Dulkamid. But, one thing he was at the beginning raised and proclaimed as a God. Later on, he was defamed and dethroned. Who is actually the bigger loser? He thought, it was not him. It had to be another man. The fact that he did not lose anything, made him happy. At this government military camp 26 kilometres (16 miles) southeast of Phnom Penh, Khmer Rouge defectors are now being trained by soldiers who less than six weeks ago were regar- ded as their main enemy. "They are now being trained to be good soldiers. Later on they may be integrated into the natio- nal army,' said one Cambodian Armed Forces lieutenant on sen- try duty outside the camp. Visi- tors without authorisation were not allowed entry, he said. The Khmer Rouge at Dey Eith camp had come from north- central Kompong Thom province on Wednesday, the officer said. He told Reuters more defectors were expected over the next few days and that the former guerril- las were travelling without their families. Under the leadership of econo- mic czar Vice Premier Zhu Rongji, Beijing has sought to rein in ballooning money supply and clamp down on irregular finan- cial dealings by recalling unap- proved bank loans and introdu- cing such natural levers as floa- ting interest rates to help regulate the economy. The crackdown has hit China's real estate business, for months the quickest way to riches for spe- culators with access to land. Investment Increase Construction Ministry statis- tics say that in 1992, China in- vested some 73,2 billion yuan ($12.8 billion) in real estate, an increase of 17 percent over 1991. Fast-paced trading by people bidding up prices sent real estate und in transactions to 52.9 billion yuan ($9.2 billion) up 87 percent over 1991, while real estate compa- nies doubled in number to reach a total of more than 12.400. by the guards. Forces loyal to Prince Norodom Sihanouk and his son Ranariddh are now part of the national army. On Wednesday, U.N. military chief, Lieutenant General John Sanderson said as many as 2,000 Khmer Rouge soldiers had now crossed over to the government side with hundreds more deser- ting to their home villages. The once-feared Khmer Rouge fighting machine has been hit with a rash of defections follo- wing the capture by the gover- nment army late last month of a major logistics base at Phum Chhat in northwest Banteay Meanchey province. Similar military success was reported by the Cambodian Ar- med Forces in several other fron- tline provinces, including Siem Reap and Kompong Thom. The Maoist-inspired Khmer Rouge, responsible for the deaths of one million Cambodians du- ring their bloody 1973-79 rule have so far been excluded from the country's interim gover- nment set up after May elections boycotted by the insurgents. Khmer Rouge defectors are now being debriefed and retrai- ned at four other regional centres outside Phnom Penh. Estimates of Khmer Rouge mi- litary strength vary but the latest U.N. military assessment places their fighting strength at about 10.000. Some analysts estimated their fighting strength as high as 40,000 during Cambodia's 13-year civil war formally ended by the signing of the 1991 Paris Peace Agreement. Meanwhile, the state is also setting up new policies including tax holidays and low-cost, or even free, land use for projects aimed at providing affordable housing for workers a key element of Beijing's overall plan to remove the "iron rice bowl" of socialism and give people greater control over their finances. This will cut costs to below 1,000 yuan ($175) per square metre of finished housing, com- pared with costs ranging as high as 8,000 yuan ($1,400) in some present luxury developments. Quizzing Of Black Youth Brings Cries Of Racism Monticello, Florida - Police hunting for the killers of a British tourist rounded up black teenagers with criminal re- cord for a second day on Thur- sday, provoking cries of racism from parents and civil rights activists. The manhunt appeared to fo- cus on two boys, aged 13 and 15, the Tallahassee Democrat reported. The youths were already sus- pects in a shooting at a Monti- cello motel room and were under arrest for car theft, the newspa- per said. It quoted law enforcement sources as saying that a bullet found at the motel room matched bullets found at the highway rest stop where tourist Gary Colley, 34, of Westy Yorkshire, England, was killed during a robbery attempt. gun, but police refused to comment. Colley was the ninth foreign tourist murdered in Florida du- ring the past year. Centre of Investigation The investigation of his death has centred on Monticello, a small town of 4,000 in northern Florida, because the suspects abandoned their stolen car there. Throughout the day, sheriff's deputies escorted black youths into the police station. About 60 teenagers were tar- geted for questioning on the basis of their criminal records, which caused an uproar from angry pa- rents and civil rights activists. But Fortune insisted police were only doing their job. Colley and his girlfriend, Mar- garet Jagger, pulled off Inter- state 10 outside Monticello to take a nap. Jagger told police two black teenagers rapped on their win- dows in a robbery attempt, the opened fire when the frightened couple tried to drive away. Third Suspect Police believe that a third sus- pect may have driven a getaway car for the teens. The shooting prompted new warnings by the British Foreign Office, including the advice.
